Garden Route Botanical Garden The Garden route Botanical Garden is a Public Benefiting Organization aimed at the conservation of the unique flora of the Southern cape region.

Located in George, the Garden Route Botanical Garden protects and showcases indigenous plants of the Garden Route, supports conservation and environmental education, and provides a welcoming green space for the community and visitors alike. We achieve this through raising awareness of its beauty through our living plant collections, education, scientific research and outreach programmes.

Wander a little deeper into the forest at the Garden Route Botanical Garden! 🌿✨

We’ve recently opened up quiet new pathways winding through our lush forest patch, all thoughtfully connected to the beloved Mushroom Meander Trail. These new loops invite you to step under the cool canopy, explore fresh corners of the forest, and take in the serene sounds of nature.

It didn’t take long for these new paths to reveal their hidden magic. Along one of these newly carved trails, keen photographer and dedicated garden supporter Etienne De Beer captured this breathtaking shot of a true forest specialist—the White-starred Robin (Pogonocichla stellata).

With its brilliant yellow underparts and slate-grey head, this elusive beauty often stays tucked away in the shadowy understorey, making Etienne's crisp capture a truly special sighting.

Next time you visit, take a stroll down the Mushroom Meander, venture onto the new pathways, and keep your eyes peeled. You never know which feathered resident might be waiting around the next turn!

A Tribute to a Life Rooted in our Garden: Prof. Elizabeth Boshoff (1939–2026)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a cornerstone of the Garden Route Botanical Garden community, Prof. Elizabeth Boshoff.

The history of our current location is inextricably linked to the vision of Elizabeth and her late husband. It was her husband's seminal proposal to BotSoc that recognized the unique potential of this land for a botanical garden, and Elizabeth was steadfastly at his side through those early, transformative years. Her footprint is woven into the very fabric of this garden’s development.

She continued that dedication personally, later serving with distinction as the Chairperson of the Trust Board, always championing the garden's conservation mission.

But beyond her leadership, Elizabeth was a daily presence on our pathways. She loved this space deeply, and for as long as she was able, she and her dog, Jemma, walked the garden every single day she could—a true guardian watching over the flora she cherished.

The entire GRBG Trust, management, staff, and members deeply mourn her loss. We will carry her legacy forward in every bloom and leaf. We will miss her presence among the Proteas.

Rest in peace, Elizabeth. Your garden will remember you.

Spring is Officially in the Air at the Garden Route Botanical Garden!

September has arrived, and with the fresh spring weather, our feathered residents are officially in full nest-building mode. Local photographer Vincent Pienaar captured these stunning action shots right here in the garden earlier this week, catching two of our active local species gathering materials for the new season:

Bar-throated Apalis (Apalis thoracica): Easily recognized by its crisp black chest band, pale eye, and proudly cocked tail, this busy insectivore was caught carrying a beakful of soft lichen (Usnea, or "Old Man's Beard") to cushion its woven, dome-shaped nest tucked into the dense undergrowth.

Forest Canary (Crithagra scotops): With its distinctive yellow eyebrow and streaked olive-green plumage, this forest-edge canary was snapped carefully selecting and carrying fine twigs and plant fibers to construct its neat cup nest higher up in the foliage.

Whether you're strolling along the forest paths or exploring the fynbos displays, keep your eyes peeled and your binoculars handy on your next visit to the Garden Route Botanical Garden—springtime birding is in full swing!

A Message to Our Community: Investing in the Future of Our Garden

To our valued visitors, access card holders, and friends of the Garden Route Botanical Garden. Over the past few years, our team and trust board have worked tirelessly to transform the garden into a safer, more vibrant, and well-maintained sanctuary for everyone in George. From essential infrastructure upgrades and display developments to ongoing site security and botanical conservation, every improvement has been made with our community in mind.

To meet rising operational expenses and sustain these ongoing enhancements, our daily entry fees and annual access card rates will be adjusting on 1 September 2026.

As a non-profit, public benefit organisation, we rely heavily on visitor support, gate fees, and access cards to care for our grounds and living collections. Every rate adjustment directly funds:

• Upkeep & Facilities: Maintaining clean, accessible pathways, benches, and visitor facilities for families, scholars, and daily walkers.

• Conservation & Plant Care: Preserving our unique regional flora, nursery propagation, and indigenous display beds.

• Safety & Security: Ensuring the grounds remain a safe, peaceful sanctuary for all visitors and cardholders.
