YOUNG URBAN WOMEN MOVEMENT (YUWM) MOKOPANE
JUNE 16 MESSAGE 2026

OUR PLACE IS IN THE REVOLUTION

As we commemorate the heroic uprising of June 16, 1976, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of young people who confronted an unjust system and demanded a future founded on dignity, equality, and freedom. Their struggle teaches us that young people are not spectators in history—they are makers of history.

Today, the Young Urban Women Movement declares that our place is in the revolution. The struggle for social and economic justice remains incomplete as young women continue to face unemployment, poverty, gender-based violence, and the burden of unpaid care work.

The care economy remains one of the most overlooked pillars of our society. Every day, women and girls care for children, the elderly, the sick, and people living with disabilities. This labour sustains families, communities, and the economy, yet it is often unpaid, underpaid, and unrecognized. A revolutionary society must place care at the centre of development and ensure that care workers enjoy decent work, fair wages, social protection, and respect.

Our place in the revolution means fighting for municipalities that invest in childcare facilities, community health services, safe public spaces, water, sanitation, electricity, and social infrastructure that eases the burden carried by women. It means demanding that public resources serve communities rather than private profit.

As young women, our place is also in the democratic processes that shape our future. Elections are a critical site of struggle. We must register, vote, organize, and hold elected representatives accountable. We refuse to be treated merely as voters; we are leaders, activists, organizers, and agents of change.

The spirit of June 16 calls upon us to build a society based on solidarity, equality, and collective care. We therefore reaffirm that young urban women are not on the sidelines of transformation.

Our place is in the revolution.
Our place is in leadership.
Our place is in building a caring and just society.

Forward to the Care Economy!
Forward to Women's Leadership!
Forward to Youth Power!
Forward to People's Democracy!

OUR PLACE IS IN THE REVOLUTION

The Young Urban Women Movement is proud to be participating in the Conference of the Left.

As advocates for a feminist alternative to neoliberalism, we believe that young women must be at the centre of building a society that places people before profit. The struggles of young women against unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, and environmental injustice are not peripheral issues—they are central to the struggle for social transformation.

Our place is not on the sidelines. Our place is in the revolution—shaping ideas, building movements, and leading the struggle for a just, equal, and caring society.

Currently underway at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, the Conference of the Left has brought together progressive formations, trade unions, community organisations, activists, and intellectuals to chart a path towards working-class and popular power. We look forward to progressive resolutions that advance the interests of young women and the broader struggle for social and economic justice.
