Wetlands are living cultural landscapes, shaped not only by water and wildlife, but by generations of people who have lived alongside them. They hold ancestral, spiritual and historical significance, with traditional knowledge guiding sustainable use and helping to protect resources in a sustainable way.
Cultural heritage strengthens wetland conservation by supporting biodiversity through culturally valued species, preserving ecological memory through storytelling, and reinforcing community stewardship rooted in identity and shared responsibility. Wetlands also contribute to local livelihoods through heritage-based tourism, while inclusive and collaborative conservation approaches ensure their protection is equitable and enduring.
As we celebrate World Wetlands Day, we recognise how cultural heritage actively contributes to conserving and protecting wetlands for future generations.
