A moment from one of our visits from matric students đź’™

Reaching matric is something to be incredibly proud of. And the matric dance isn’t just a party — it’s a celebration of everything these young people have overcome to get there. Families, friends and neighbours all come together to celebrate the students who made it.

Seeing the pride, excitement and sense of achievement in moments like this was always one of the most special parts of Dress It Forward.

Every year, outside homes and schools across the Cape Flats, something magical happens.

A matric student steps out in their dress or suit… and suddenly the whole street comes alive.
Cars arrive. Cameras come out. Families cheer.

And standing there watching it all are the younger children.

They see the glitz.
They see the glamour.
But most importantly… they see what is possible.

For many of them, life is full of obstacles — poverty, gangs, drugs, and pressures that make staying in school incredibly difficult. But when they see someone from their own street graduate and walk the red carpet, it changes something.

It plants a seed.

"If they did it… maybe I can too."

That’s why we say a dress is more than just a dress.
It’s a celebration of hard work, resilience, and dreams.

And it inspires the next generation to stay in school and reach matric themselves one day.
