Community-Cleaners

Community-Cleaners We work together as a community to keep our neighbourhoods clean and safe, primarily focusing on the areas of Fairland, Northcliff, Berario, and Valeriedene.

Community-Cleaners are a Community-Based Organisation focused on creating jobs for our local South African citizens by cleaning up and maintaining our local parks and streets. Funded by our local residents we endeavour to keep our parks and streets clean and safe. Our story begins with community members who came together out of concern for the diminishing state of the parks, residents no longer ma

ke use of areas like the Fairlands Koppie or Kings Park (to name just a couple) because of the crime and the deteriorating state which the parks are in. What started as a small initiative, picking up litter and maintaining overgrown vegetation in our parks turned into something bigger than we could ever have anticipated. Together they organised a clean-up group consisting of local residents and the first project namely Fairlands Koppie was addressed. The meet was a massive success and the need for us as residents to be actively involved became increasingly apparent. The group agreed weekly clean ups should be arranged and rather than us sitting at home behind our screens complaining about the lack of services available it was up to us to make the difference. Our group continued to meet up weekly and residents who were not able to make clean up days began to make small donations enabling the group to expand and start employing people to assist with our clean ups

On Facebook and WhatsApp, and in our communities, you generally find three types of people when it comes to the problems around us.

1. APATHY, โ€œI DON'T CARE.โ€
The observers. The people who see the rubbish, neglected parks, broken infrastructure and other problems around them, but simply carry on with their lives.
They see it, but don't get involved.
"It's not my problem."
"Someone else will deal with it."
"I don't care.

2. ANGER
The complainers and keyboard warriors.
They are angry about poor service delivery and rightly frustrated by what they see.
"I pay my taxes!"
"It's the municipality's job, they get paid to do it!"
They point out the problems, post about them and criticise those responsible, but often stop there.

3. ACTION, โ€œI WILL DO SOMETHING.โ€
The activists, doers, fixers, problem-solvers and the people who support them.
They don't wait for someone else.
They say:
"This is my street."
"This is my suburb."
"This is my park."
"This is my community."
โ€œI may not be able to fix everything, but I can do something.โ€

They pick up the litter.
They repair what they can.

They report problems.
They organise projects.
They volunteer.
They donate.
They support those who are making a difference.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
- You can watch the problem.
- You can complain about the problem.
- Or you can be part of the solution.

You don't have to do everything

Just do something.

Because communities don't improve when everyone waits for someone else to act.
They improve when ordinary people decide to care and get involved. ๐Ÿ’š
