๐ŸŸข Child Protection Week 2026 | New Research: Why Are Only 4% of Child Abuse Cases in KwaZulu-Natal Resulting in Convictions?
This Child Protection Month, we are releasing findings from our latest research paper and the results demand urgent attention from every South African.

The Crisis in Numbers
KwaZulu-Natal records the highest number of r**e charges against children nationally. In a single financial year, 421 children aged 10โ€“14 fell pregnant in the province, nearly three children every two days. Yet despite these devastating figures, only 4% of child abuse cases result in convictions.

South Africa has some of the most progressive child protection laws in the world. So why are children still being failed?
What Our Paper Reveals

Our 26-page research paper, Child Protection in South Africa: A Critical Analysis of the Crisis in KwaZulu-Natal, exposes the gap between legislation and reality:

โ€ข ๐Ÿ“‚ DNA evidence lost or delayed including a one-in-a-trillion
DNA match that was thrown out on a technicality
โ€ข ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš–๏ธ Prosecutors withdrawing cases without adequate justification
โ€ข ๐Ÿฅ Medical evidence (J88 reports) missing from court dockets
โ€ข ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Family pressure silencing child victims
โ€ข ๐Ÿซ Only 7% of KZN teachers vetted against the National Register for S*x Offenders

Why This Matters to You
Whether you are a corporate leader, funder, policymaker, educator, or concerned citizen, this crisis requires a collective response. Protecting children is not the responsibility of government alone. It is our shared responsibility.

The 2026 Child Protection Month theme calls on all of us to work together. This paper gives you the evidence, the case studies, and the recommendations to understand what is broken and what needs to change.

We are sharing this research freely because we believe informed communities drive change.

Together, we can ensure that KwaZulu-Natal's children are protected not just by law but in practice.

Child Care South Africa would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Delta Force Elite Security Solutions for the outstanding support they gave us following the break-in at our offices on John Ross Road, Eshowe Town, last Friday. While the Eshowe South African Police Service Station responded urgently to the incident, we were deeply touched by the compassion and professionalism shown by Delta Force officers Mr. Phumlani Zibane and Mr. Njabulo Gxagxiso, who were on patrol in town at the time.

Instead of simply passing by, they stopped to assist our Chairperson who was on site, accompanied her in assessing the office premises, and helped identify the point of entry used during the break-in. They remained with us until they were satisfied that everything was in order and safe.

Your officers demonstrated true professionalism, dedication, compassion, and commitment to protecting our community. Their actions reflected the strong values of Delta Force Elite Security Solutions and reminded us that Eshowe is protected by people who genuinely care.

Siyabonga kakhulu to Delta Force Elite Security Solutions, Mr. Phumlani Zibane, and Mr. Njabulo Gxagxiso and Eshowe Police Station Officers for standing with us during a difficult moment. Your kindness and support will never be forgotten.

Together, we continue building a safer, stronger, and more caring Eshowe community where everyone works hand in hand for the well-being of our people.

As Child Care South Africa, we proudly stand with our nation to commemorate Freedom Day on 27 April. This day is a powerful reminder of our journey from oppression to democracy, marking the moment in 1994 when all South Africans could finally vote freely.

Freedom is about so much more than just political rights; itโ€™s about restoring dignity, safeguarding human rights, and creating opportunities for every child and family to thrive. As we celebrate this significant day, we take a moment to reflect on how far we've come and the work that still lies ahead especially when it comes to ensuring that our most vulnerable children are safe, supported, and empowered.

At Child Care South Africa, we believe that true freedom is achieved when every child has access to protection, education, and the hope for a brighter future. We are dedicated to strengthening families, uplifting communities, and advocating for the rights and well-being of all children.

Letโ€™s honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom by working together to build a society grounded in justice, equality, and compassion. Together, we can make sure that freedom is not just a word, but a reality that every child in South Africa experiences and cherishes.
