Our objective is to support the growth and development of debating in Empangeni and surrounding areas

We have a strong belief that education is the source of empowerment for small communities and is ultimately the solution to the socio-economic and even environmental issues in our society. The challenge is changing the mentality of a community that has settled for hand- in’s as well as being served by the government. The main problem in our small communities is not the lack of infrastructure (road

s, water, and electricity) although its significance can’t be denied. The problem is merely based on the society’s level of education and their perspective towards education. Government providing electricity, water and other infrastructure won’t decrease the level of teenage pregnancy, or tackle the issue of substance abuse by youngsters; neither will it tackle the burdensome dependence of rural communities to the social grant. On the other hand, cultivating positive attitudes towards education especially in rural community schools and ensuring the availability of enough resources for conducive learning and teaching while providing information and guidance career-wise will steer a few minds to focus on but one thing which is education.

The Empangeni Debating League sent Top 12 junior & 7 senior speakers to represent Empangeni in the annual KZN Schools Debating Association Provincial Tournament that was held in Northwood High School, Durban from the 23rd-25th of July 2026.Speakers who represented EDL:

•Sbahle Shandu- ranked 8th in the Top 10 Academy junior speakers & got selected to be part of KZN Junior Trial Squad 2026
