ANCYL NKANGALA REGION | 82 YEARS OF YOUTH ACTIVISM & SERVICE
From the historic formation of the African National Congress Youth League in 1944, young leaders such as Anton Lembede, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo and A.P. Mda helped establish a generation of youth organisation and political activism that became an important part of South Africaβs liberation history.
The founding generation emphasised youth organisation, political education, discipline, mobilisation and the development of future leaders. The ANCYLβs 1944 manifesto specifically highlighted the need to unite, train and develop young people to take their place in the affairs of the country.
82 years later, the responsibility of young people remains significant. As South Africa approaches the 2026 Local Government Elections, youth participation in democratic processes includes civic education, voter registration, community engagement, understanding local government and encouraging eligible young people to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
For ANCYL structures, election work can therefore be connected to the historic tradition of organising, engaging communities, listening to residents and ensuring that young people understand the issues that affect their communities.
From the Class of β44 to the youth of 2026 β generations change, but the importance of informed, organised and active young citizens remains.
82 YEARS OF YOUTH ACTION.
82 YEARS OF ORGANISATION.
82 YEARS OF LEADERSHIP.
A LEGACY THAT CONTINUES.
