Treeofhope Tree of Hope Baby Box was created because the East Rand was devoid of any space where parents intent on abandoning their child, could do so safely

It is estimated that 3,500 babies are abandoned every year in South Africa. What makes this statistic even harder to swallow, is that these are only the figures for the children who survive. Figures compiled in Gauteng show that for every abandoned child found alive, two are found dead. A recent Medical Research Council study on child homicide reveals that children in South Africa are at the highe

st risk of unnatural deaths in the first six days of life. Research shows that 65 per cent of abandoned children are newborns, and 90 per cent are under the age of one. Many abandoned babies have already survived a late-term abortion. 52 to 58 per cent of SA abortions are illegal (up to150 000 per year).

70 per cent of abandonments are unsafe and many babies are never found. These are the reasons that the Tree of Hope was created. The East Rand was devoid of any space where parents intent on abandoning their child, could do so safely. In recent years, 3 children have simply been left at the gate of Monte Waldi Nursery School. One child was almost missed. It was a Friday and that gate is largely unused in the evenings. Only by sheer luck was the child seen. The Tree of Hope works closely with the SAPS and Edenvale Welfare to ensure that any baby abandoned has the best chance of a good forever family. References

Today we are looking at Women's day differently- we want to celebrate women who stood up for what is right in times when it was unheard of to stand up. We want to celebrate women following in their footsteps that decided enough is enough! Women who fight for change, who won't be intimidated, who doesn't care being called names, being called "aggressive", being called "out of line" when they fight to protect the vunerable. Women who will fight for change because it is needed!!!!!
Its easy for people to say- " be the change!", yet very few people will step up and fight for the change. For our warriors- women and men- we salute you!!

Mandela day 2026!!
Most people do not always know what to do for Mandela day- well; we have an idea.... what about donating to Tree of Hope? If all of our followers just donate R10 we will be good to go for a few months, now imagine what R67 will do!!!
That R67 will go a long way!🙏🙏
We get so many donations of clothes etc and we greatly appreciate everything, but unfortunately we also need money to keep going-
We need to pay rent, electricity, water, (utilities) for 3 properties, (2 homes and a nursery school). The nursery school staff needs a salary.
Maintenance needs to be done, children get sick and have to go to the doctor and and and.
As human beings we always think- "a lot of other people will help" and at the end very few people actually helps- so be " the other people" and help us this Mandela day please!

What does Tree of Hope do?
1. We have a baby saver where mothers/ parents can safely surrender their babies instead of leaving them on a rubbish dump, throwing them in a pit latrine or dustbin etc to die. We are currently in the high court as part of baby savers SA to fight for safe haven laws in South- Africa.
2. We have a mommy project where we help mothers in need- we help them with food parcels, kit them out with stuff for their baby, train them as nannies or cooks and help them with a CV. This process normally takes 3 months.
3. We have a nursery school for children from low to no income families. We give the children breakfast, snack at 10, cooked lunch and a snack at 3 again.
4. We have a volunteer program to assist SAPS, EMS services etc when they need an adult to be with a child, for example a while ago there was a fatal accident, the father passed away, the mother was taken to hosp, but died shortly after arrival and Daniela sat with the children until family arrived.
5. We have 2 safe houses where we take 6 children in for safe care/ foster care.
6. We sponsor a few children to attend The le Roux Schools.

Appreciation post
On Thursday evening, 2 July we were called out to help. I am not going into details as it was quite heart breaking and left Daniela and I a bit traumatised, but this post is not about us or the incident.
This post is about Midrand DSD's social workers. All I can say is WOW!!!! We met with them around 23h00 that evening and by then they were there since that afternoon.
They were tired, but so professional, caring, empathetic and friendly.
Thank you DSD Midrand for all that you did on Thursday and again on Friday. We will always help you guys!!!!!

**34 years of excellence**
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE BEST SECURITY COMPANY!!!!!
Mamba Strike Force turned 34!!
Mamba strike force has been looking after Tree of Hope since 2019! In all this time we have NEVER experienced bad service from Mamba.
Mamba takes care of the security of our little school as well as the homes of the safe care mommies!
They came out to every baby that came through our saver!!! So many photo's, so many memories. MAMBA's donations kept our mommy project going for the last few years. Without Mamba Strike Force we will not be able to do what we do!
They do so much for the community,- they keep us safe, they have clean-up operations, they support so many charities and so much more!
Thank you Mamba! We thank all the reaction officers, guards, management, controllers, admin personnel and management, we appreciate you!

UPDATE ON COURT CASE
Day 3 went well and now we wait for the final determination of the high court!!
Herewith the latest court order. The baby savers are still allowed to operate until the final determination of the high court. As I said previously, this is not a competition between BSSA and DSD, and we do not view them as the villians. We have a different outlook and as Solomon in the bible had to decide the fate of the baby when the two mothers both claimed to be the mother of the baby, the high court must decide the way forward. All we want is for our children of South Africa to be safe and not die on rubbish dumps, stormwater drains, pit- latrines etc. We want to offer a safe alternative.
