High court case update
As many of you know DSD Gauteng is against baby savers and has tried to close the baby savers in Gauteng. Tree of Hope is part of Baby Savers SA and Baby savers SA and door of hope had to go to court to stop this from happening.
DSD says that baby savers promote abandonment- ( no research to back that statement) yet babies are unsafely abandoned and killed daily in South- Africa.
DSD also says they are against baby savers because a child has a right to an identity and culture and if relinguished anonymously they do not know their indentity or culture- it is a valid point, BUT what is the alternative- to die in a stormwater drain without an identity??? Or to be picked up on a rubbish dump....
DSD further says that baby savers open a gap for child trafficking- this is one of the main reasons why we created Baby Savers SA- to regulate the savers....
DSD says they have alternatives in place- for example to give baby up for adoption, to give baby up for foster care, oh and my favourite- baby can be left at hospital after birth for adoption....
Well, clearly their alternatives don't work because unsafe child abandonment is at an all time high. I spoke to numerous mothers and had to hear how they were shamed, how they were forced to breastfeed the baby etc. Now you can shame these ladies all you want, but until you didnt walk in their shoes, you have no right to judge. This is not DSD's fault, but it shows that their alternatives are being sabotaged by other roleplayers.
I hear what DSD says, but I do not agree 100% with everything-
Baby Savers SA says- lets be part of the solution- at the end it is about saving lives- a safe alternative for a desperate mom.
DSD we hear you, but what about if we fight together for safe haven laws in South-Africa?
What about if we take hands and say lets work together-
1. Lets start with staff at hospitals- maybe additional training to be more empathetic, nursing staff putting their own beliefs aside and listen to the mothers and help them, not shame them, not judge them. DSD- what about rolling out a program to educate them?
2. Installing baby savers at fire stations or police stations? Then DSD can regulate the savers.
3. Hold your social workers accountable. No social worker should judge or shame a mother if she approaches them to give up her baby for adoption- yet it happens all the time- we had a mother that placed her baby in our saver after she went to the CPO in our area to give up her baby for adoption. Instead of helping her, they gave her a food parcel and send her away- well she placed baby in our saver and left the food parcel at the taxi rank. How do we know this? Because she phoned us to ask how her baby was doing.
In short- this is not about Baby Savers SA against DSD, no not at all- this is about getting safe haven laws in South-Africa- laws to protect OUR children!!! Children of South-Africa!!
As we say at Tree of Hope-
IF YOU SAFE ONE CHILD, YOU SAFE A NATION!!!!!
Tomorrow is the last day in court. Please pray for our legal team and all the children of South- Africa.
