A video circulated on social media showing a trapped zebra being hacked to death with an axe in Limpopo. The NSPCA's Wildlife Protection Unit tracked those responsible, secured an arrest, and ensured the matter went to court. The internet thought no one was watching. We were.

The recent fuel price increase in South Africa will place enormous pressure on animal welfare organisations like Nigel SPCA, especially because rescue work depends heavily on transport, outreach, and daily operational movement.

Fuel prices increased sharply in May 2026, with petrol rising by R3.27 per litre and diesel by over R6 per litre. For organisations already operating on limited donations, this creates a direct financial crisis.

Here’s how it affects animal welfare and rescue work:

• Rescue vehicles become far more expensive to operate. Inspectors and staff must travel long distances to collect injured, abandoned, abused, or stray animals. Every rescue now costs more in fuel alone.

• Outreach programmes are affected. Many SPCAs provide food assistance, sterilisation outreach, and education in vulnerable communities. Rising transport costs may force organisations to reduce these services.

• Emergency responses may slow down. Fuel budgets are limited. When costs rise dramatically, difficult decisions may need to be made about prioritising the most urgent cruelty and rescue cases first.

• Animal food and medical costs will also rise. Fuel increases affect transport and supply chains across South Africa, meaning pet food, medicines, cleaning products, and veterinary supplies become more expensive too.

• Donations often decline during economic hardship. When households struggle with transport and food costs, charitable giving usually drops. This places additional pressure on shelters already stretched beyond capacity.

• More animals may be surrendered or abandoned. Families facing financial strain sometimes cannot afford food, sterilisation, or veterinary care for their pets, leading to increased abandonment and overcrowding at shelters.

The impact is especially severe for smaller community SPCAs like Nigel SPCA, where fundraising and donor support are critical to daily survival.

At the same time, the need for help usually increases during economic hardship:
🐾 more cruelty complaints,
🐾 more neglected animals,
🐾 more requests for food assistance,
🐾 and more abandoned pets.

This means SPCAs are expected to do more work with fewer resources.

A strong message to the public right now is that support does not only mean money. Communities can help by:
🐶 donating pet food or blankets,
🐶 volunteering,
🐶 supporting charity shops,
🐶 sponsoring fuel for rescue vehicles,

Even one tank of fuel can help save lives.

𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲
The day was finally over—or so we thought. The office was quiet, the kennels were settling into the hum of the night, and the weight of a dozen previous heartbreaks was starting to settle in our bones. Then, the phone rang. It was that sharp, jagged ringtone that never brings good news.

On the other line, the air was thick with a family’s shattered peace. Their voices were a raw blend of fury and weeping. Their dog—a gentle, golden-souled Africanis named Spike—had been subjected to the unthinkable. She had been r*ped.

ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴇɪɢʜᴛ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴀᴅɢᴇ
Inspector Mariska felt that familiar, cold hollow in her chest. It is a feeling every animal rescuer knows—the moment your heart breaks for a creature that doesn't even understand why it is hurting. But Mariska didn't have the luxury of tears.

While John headed into the night to bring Spike into our care, Mariska became a lifeline on the phone. She called vet after vet, the desperation growing as the clock ticked. In cases of such horrific cruelty, time is a thief; it steals the evidence needed to put monsters behind bars. Our sisters at Springs SPCA didn't hesitate, driving through the dark to bring an Animal Evidence Collection Kit. It was a grim relay race for justice.

ᴀ ɴɪɢʜᴛ ᴏꜰ Qᴜɪᴇᴛ ᴛʀᴇᴍʙʟɪɴɢ
When John returned, Spike was a shadow of herself. She wasn't just a "case number" or a "report." She was a confused, terrified girl who had lost her sense of safety. She waited in our care, her family left behind in a wake of trauma, while we stood watch over her.

At dawn, we loaded her into the car. The morning air was cold, but the care waiting for her was warm. At Craigview Vet, Dr. Bull handled her with a tenderness that felt like a prayer. Spike stood there, patient and heartbreakingly still, as we moved through the clinical steps of a forensic exam. She didn’t understand the "why," but she seemed to feel the "who"—the people who were finally standing between her and the world’s cruelty.

ʙᴇʜɪɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴄᴇɴᴇꜱ ᴏꜰ ᴀ ʙʀᴏᴋᴇɴ ꜱʏꜱᴛᴇᴍ
From the vet, it was a race to Tsakane SAPS. A docket was opened. A stand was taken. We cannot say more about the legalities, but know this: we are fighting for her with everything we have.

But this is the part the public doesn't always see. We are tired. We are stretched thin across a vast map with an empty tank and a dwindling bank account. We get calls all day—about barking dogs, about minor nuisances, about people frustrated that we didn't call them back fast enough. To those people, we say: Please, look at Spike. When we don't answer a noise complaint immediately, it is because we are holding a dog like Spike while she trembles. It is because we are in a police station demanding justice for the violated. It is because our resources are so low that we have to choose which tragedy is the most urgent.

𝗔 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁
Recently, someone told us that if we want the community to give, we must "give back" first. To that, we say: What more can we give than our lives? We give our sleep, our peace of mind, and our every waking hour to animals who have no one else.

The Brakpan SPCA is running on empty. If we close, who answers that midnight phone call? Who drives into the dark for the Spikes of the world?

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀
We owe a debt of gratitude to those who carried the weight with us:
Dr. Bull at Craig View Veterinary Clinic, for his unwavering skill and compassion.

Friend of the Rottweiler Rescue & Re-home South Africa, who saw the bill and said, "We’ve got her."

Our Sisters at the SPCA Springs, for a "NO QUESTIONS ASKED" approach.

Our Staff, who see the worst of humanity and still choose to show the best of it.

Spike is safe now. She is loved, she is being healed, and we are ensuring she is sterilized and vaccinated so she never has to face the world unprotected again. Her family loves her, and this nightmare was never their fault.

Please, don't let the light go out at Brakpan SPCA. We need you so we can keep needing to be there for them.

Parvovirus is a serious and deadly illness. Here's what everydog guardian needs to know before taking a new pup out for the first time.🐾

Parvovirus, commonly called "parvo", is a highly contagious viral disease that kills puppies fast. It spreads through faeces, saliva, vomit, and even contaminated soil, paws, or shoes. Your puppy doesn't need to be near a sick dog to get it. Simply walking in an affected area is enough.

Symptoms include bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and lethargy. Without treatment, parvo can be fatal within days. Treatment requires hospitalisation and is expensive, with no guarantee of survival.

The good news: parvo is completely preventable!

Vaccinate your puppy on schedule. Full protection is usually reached at 14 to 16 weeks. Until then, keep her home and away from unknown dogs and public spaces.

If you're unsure about your puppy's vaccination schedule, call your local SPCA for advice.
