𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲
The day was finally over—or so we thought. The office was quiet, the kennels were settling into the hum of the night, and the weight of a dozen previous heartbreaks was starting to settle in our bones. Then, the phone rang. It was that sharp, jagged ringtone that never brings good news.
On the other line, the air was thick with a family’s shattered peace. Their voices were a raw blend of fury and weeping. Their dog—a gentle, golden-souled Africanis named Spike—had been subjected to the unthinkable. She had been r*ped.

Inspector Mariska felt that familiar, cold hollow in her chest. It is a feeling every animal rescuer knows—the moment your heart breaks for a creature that doesn't even understand why it is hurting. But Mariska didn't have the luxury of tears.
While John headed into the night to bring Spike into our care, Mariska became a lifeline on the phone. She called vet after vet, the desperation growing as the clock ticked. In cases of such horrific cruelty, time is a thief; it steals the evidence needed to put monsters behind bars. Our sisters at Springs SPCA didn't hesitate, driving through the dark to bring an Animal Evidence Collection Kit. It was a grim relay race for justice.

When John returned, Spike was a shadow of herself. She wasn't just a "case number" or a "report." She was a confused, terrified girl who had lost her sense of safety. She waited in our care, her family left behind in a wake of trauma, while we stood watch over her.
At dawn, we loaded her into the car. The morning air was cold, but the care waiting for her was warm. At Craigview Vet, Dr. Bull handled her with a tenderness that felt like a prayer. Spike stood there, patient and heartbreakingly still, as we moved through the clinical steps of a forensic exam. She didn’t understand the "why," but she seemed to feel the "who"—the people who were finally standing between her and the world’s cruelty.

From the vet, it was a race to Tsakane SAPS. A docket was opened. A stand was taken. We cannot say more about the legalities, but know this: we are fighting for her with everything we have.
But this is the part the public doesn't always see. We are tired. We are stretched thin across a vast map with an empty tank and a dwindling bank account. We get calls all day—about barking dogs, about minor nuisances, about people frustrated that we didn't call them back fast enough. To those people, we say: Please, look at Spike. When we don't answer a noise complaint immediately, it is because we are holding a dog like Spike while she trembles. It is because we are in a police station demanding justice for the violated. It is because our resources are so low that we have to choose which tragedy is the most urgent.

Recently, someone told us that if we want the community to give, we must "give back" first. To that, we say: What more can we give than our lives? We give our sleep, our peace of mind, and our every waking hour to animals who have no one else.
The Brakpan SPCA is running on empty. If we close, who answers that midnight phone call? Who drives into the dark for the Spikes of the world?

We owe a debt of gratitude to those who carried the weight with us:
Dr. Bull at Craig View Veterinary Clinic, for his unwavering skill and compassion.
Friend of the Rottweiler Rescue & Re-home South Africa, who saw the bill and said, "We’ve got her."
Our Sisters at the SPCA Springs, for a "NO QUESTIONS ASKED" approach.
Our Staff, who see the worst of humanity and still choose to show the best of it.
Spike is safe now. She is loved, she is being healed, and we are ensuring she is sterilized and vaccinated so she never has to face the world unprotected again. Her family loves her, and this nightmare was never their fault.
Please, don't let the light go out at Brakpan SPCA. We need you so we can keep needing to be there for them.
