Dube Village in Crisis: The Struggle for Clean Water!

In the heart of King William's Town lies the small, often overlooked village of Dube. This village, home to generations of families, now faces a crisis that threatens the health and wellbeing of its residents: the absence of clean, running water. For the past year, the taps that once provided a vital resource have run dry. The municipality, which once sourced water for the village, has ceased doing so, leaving the community to rely on precarious sources like nearby dams, where livestock drink, and distant rivers.

The community's reliance on these unsafe water sources is a ticking time bomb, with the potential to trigger a public health crisis. The elderly, children, and the chronically ill are particularly vulnerable, but everyone in the village is affected by the lack of clean water.

This village, like many others in rural areas, has been left behind in the quest for development. The government's promises of basic services have not reached Dube, leaving its people to fend for themselves in increasingly dire circumstances.

Dube's residents are resilient, but resilience can only carry them so far. They need and deserve access to clean, safe water—a basic human right that has been denied to them for too long. The story of Dube is a stark reminder that the fight for equality and access to resources is far from over in South Africa. Until every village, no matter how small or remote, has access to the basic necessities of life, the struggle continues.

Traditional authorities play a critical and multifaceted role in mobilising communities for the improvement of a number of social challenges that include GBV&F in terms of the South African National Strategic Plan. There is however a notable gap between what their role, skills and capacities in gender mainstreaming and how to implement transformative initiatives. Border Rural Committee and The Eastern Cape Men’s Movement visited AmaBhele aseMnyameni Traditional Council to ascertain their awareness as a key stakeholder in the GBV&F fight and capacity. Hosted by BRC, ECMM secretariat and facilitator Mr Jongile Hoza, and the Commission for Gender Equality will lead a capacity Building workshop for the council which is a build up to an Imbizo that will be led by AmaBhele.
