At 15h13 on Monday, 31 August, NSRI Durban duty crew and the KZN Surf Rescue network were activated after eyewitnesses reported a man in distress on the Umgeni River, being swept upstream between the two roadway bridges on the incoming tide. Clifford Ireland understands that saving lives as a volunteer is a way of life. And that sometimes volunteers need support. The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) newest Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC), Spirit of Ubuntu, has completed her journey from Table Bay and arrived at her new home at NSRI Station 8 Hout Bay yesterday, 19 August 2026.
