Meet Lizalise Mpongo, a Civil Engineering Level 2 student at Buffalo City TVET College whose journey with bumb’INGOMSO (BI) began in 2019, when she was in Grade 9 at Nomaheya SSS.

At the time, Lizalise was struggling with her behaviour at school, concentrating in class and navigating challenges in her personal life. After losing her mother in 2020, she faced further difficulties and turned to substance use while struggling to cope with her pain.

Recognising that she needed support, her Life Orientation teacher and the bumb’INGOMSO mentor placed at her school, helped her access mental health support and find a space where she could begin sharing her story.

She joined a BI club, and that is where Lizalise found a sense of belonging and opportunities to learn more about herself, understand her experiences and recognise the possibilities ahead of her.Being part of a space where young people could share their experiences also helped her appreciate the importance of listening to others, understanding their pain and offering support without judgement.

Today, Lizalise reflects on just how much has changed. "I’m so proud of myself. I’m just a girl now that has dreams” she shares.

Where she once struggled to concentrate at school, Lizalise says she can hardly go a day without opening a textbook now. She is currently pursuing Civil Engineering, a field she chose because she enjoys working with her hands and building things.

Her journey reflects what can look like - discovering more about yourself and beginning to see a future beyond the challenges you have faced.

“Bumb’INGOMSO deserves a trophy, and I’m so glad that today I’m here because of this programme,”

And to other young people navigating grief or difficult circumstances, Lizalise has this message:

“Losing someone who is close to your heart doesn't mean you should do things you will regret. I know it's hard to accept that you don't have a parent, but this is the time to put yourself first. Don't let your pain become the reason you make choices that hurt you. Just be a girl with dreams and a better future. Even boys, don't give up. There's still a chance for you to rise again.”

𝐁𝐈 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓! ✨

Hey Mntase!

Our 2026 bumb’INGOMSO (BI) Clubs at Buffalo City TVET College and Lovedale TVET College recently came together at BCC’s main campus for a bittersweet closing event.

From poems and dance to a powerful Gender-Based Violence awareness performance, the day was filled with reflection and stories that reminded us why these clubs matter.

The BI Clubs created spaces for students to build sisterhood and brotherhood, learn from one another and share knowledge with their peers. Through peer support and collective action, members also worked to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV), challenge harmful behaviours and promote respect and equality among one another 🫶🏽

Our Peer Mentors shared their journeys, while Peer Mentees opened up about why they joined and how being part of the clubs helped them feel a sense of belonging.

Every young person deserves a space where they feel seen and supported, and we are so proud that BI Clubs have provided that for so many young people.
