Gents! 👋🏽

Did you know that June is Men's Mental Health Month?

Mental health affects everyone, including men and boys.
Yet many may delay seeking support because society pressures them to "be strong" or handle challenges on their own.

Talking to a trusted friend, family member or Healthcare professional is not a sign of weakness.

In fact, it's a sign of strength and is an important step towards maintaining good mental health. 💪🏾

If uyagowa, Call our toll-free Call Centre number 0800 555 558 or DM us.

Masithetheni, taking care of your mental health is as important as taking care of your physical health.

Hey Mntase! 👋🏽

The Psychosocial Support Team recently hosted a Training of Trainers Workshop as part of their Sustainability Programme for staff at Buffalo City TVET College !

The workshop aimed to equip lecturers and Student Support Services with communication, tutoring, and facilitation skills to better support students academically.

Participants also had the opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills while also building confidence as they prepare to take on new roles.

This marks the beginning of an exciting series of workshops focused on empowering college staff to create supportive learning environments and contribute to student success. 🚀📚

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 is here, and so are we! 🎉

Let’s talk honestly for a moment. When June 16 comes around each year, what does it mean to you? Is it a day that still inspires reflection and conversation, or has it become just another public holiday on the calendar? 🤔

This Youth Month, we're not just celebrating young people, we want to hear from you! Your voice, your experiences, and your ideas are important!

That is why, starting next week, we are running an exciting competition that allows you to speak your truth! 🤩

Look out for information on prizes to be won and instructions on how to enter, in the coming week!

But for starters, please tell us what Youth Month means to you…. Be honest, this is a safe space! 🫂

#𝗞𝗛𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 🥳

Breaking news!!!

You may already know… IKHWELOLethu implements a debate programme in schools to strengthen healthy verbal interactions among 10-14-year-old girls and boys in order to shape equal gender norms.

This programme is facilitated by bumb’INGOMSO mentors and coordinators, but recently, teachers have also been trained to run this important project.

We’re excited to introduce the teachers who will oversee debating in schools, recognising them as dedicated educators who strengthen and support the BCM and Amathole debate structures.

These are the teachers helping young people build confidence, think critically, speak boldly, and believe in their voices at school and beyond!

First up is 𝗡𝗼𝗸𝘄𝗮𝗺𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗟𝘂𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗼 from Siyakhula Public School, an English Home Language and Life Orientation teacher who is using debating to inspire growth, confidence, and teamwork among learners.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿?

I was inspired to become a teacher by my primary school educator, who showed her learners genuine love and care, and by my university lecturer, who taught us that a supported child grows into a confident and good person.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹?

I chose to get involved in debating because it gave learners a platform to find their voices, build confidence, and become more motivated to do better in their studies.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲?

It’s their curious minds and intuitive nature, which constantly challenge us as educators to stay alert, adaptable, and inspired.”

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀?

Debating has helped many learners become more focused on their studies. Some have also shown positive changes in their behaviour and attitude, becoming more respectful, confident, and engaged in school.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺?

One thing that makes me proud of my debate team is the way they support one another and their willingness to learn. Their teamwork, unity, and commitment make it easy for us to grow and succeed together as a team.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴?

I would encourage other teachers to be patient with their learners and not force them to join debating but rather allow them to choose it willingly. When learners feel comfortable and motivated, it becomes much easier to work with them. Teachers should also be actively involved so they can guide, support, and lead by example.
