For those who may not know, this is where the name Breath of Life was born... đź’š

In 2009, our founder, Giselle Pauls, heard God speak through Ezekiel 37:5:

"I will put breath in you, and you will live."

And she said yes.

What began as one person's obedience to God's voice has, by His grace, become a place where life is celebrated every single day.

Our world is filled with stories that seem beyond repair. Stories of abandonment. Grief. Fear. Impossible circumstances. But this beautiful passage reminds us that God doesn't see what we see. Where we see an ending, He sees the beginning of something new.
That has always been the heartbeat of Breath of Life.

Every little life entrusted to us is a miracle. Every smile, every milestone, every family formed, every future restored is a testimony that God is still breathing life into places that once seemed hopeless.

Seventeen years later, His promise is still alive. His breath is still bringing hope. His faithfulness is still unfolding before our eyes.

We are so grateful that we get to witness it every single day.

When God speaks life, even death has to loosen its grip. ❤️

Reunification is one of the most important principles in child protection.

In terms of South Africa’s Children’s Act 38 of 2005, the first priority should always be to determine whether a child can safely remain within their family or return to their family with the necessary support, monitoring, and intervention services in place. Child protection is not only about removal. It is about protection, rehabilitation, preservation, and creating safe environments for children to thrive.

When a child cannot safely remain in their home environment, temporary safe care may become necessary to provide immediate protection and stability while assessments, court processes, reunification efforts, or alternative care planning take place.

Where reunification is not possible or not in the best interests of the child, other forms of alternative care may be considered, including foster care, adoption, or placement in a Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC).

Recently, we had the privilege of being part of a reunification journey after a long period of separation, strained relationships, uncertainty, and immense challenges. Watching this family come back together step by step has honestly been one of the most incredible things to witness.

To see healing happen in real time. To watch relationships rebuild. To see people grow, reconnect, and work toward creating a safe and stable environment for a child again. There are very few things in this field that compare to witnessing that process unfold.

And when reunification is safely possible and truly in the best interests of the child, it is one of the most meaningful outcomes imaginable!

Freedom Day 2026

When we speak about Freedom Day, we often think about the freedoms won in 1994, the right to vote, the right to dignity, and the promise of equal opportunity. However, Freedom Day also asks something of us, to consider who still needs access to that promise.

For a child, freedom is not something abstract. It is to be protected, nourished, and given the opportunity to grow in an environment where they are loved and given every chance to thrive. When that opportunity is threatened by crisis, vulnerability, or abandonment, we should feel called to respond.

Breath of Life responds by faithfully working every day to care for vulnerable infants and by supporting mothers in crisis. Breath of Life creates access to safety, stability, and the opportunity to live out the freedom promised to them, right from the start of life. Perhaps that is one of the deepest expressions of freedom, ensuring that every child, no matter how their story begins, has the opportunity for a better future.

Hundreds of mothers and children have been able to experience parts of that promised freedom because of the work we do at Breath of Life.

We are so grateful to each person who supports our work and helps make that possible, every single day. Thank you! 🙏❤️

There’s something really powerful about watching people come together for a reason that doesn’t benefit them directly.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve watched Nisha’s birthday turn into something much bigger than a celebration. It became a space where people chose to give, and to be part of the lives of children they may never meet.

R102 582 later… and we’re still sitting in awe of what that actually means. Not just in rands, but in what it allows us to do, and the care it makes possible.

To everyone who played a part in this, in ways big or small, thank you for being part of this story with us! ❤️

Nisha, thank you for choosing to celebrate your life in such a meaningful and selfless way!!
