Small Projects Foundation

Small Projects Foundation The Small Projects Foundation's vision is to develop ways of supporting disadvantaged individuals.

The Small Projects Foundation, also known as SPF is an NGO / NPO registered Trust that has been operating for over 36 years. The Foundation has been a major contributor to development in the Eastern Cape over this period with specific emphasis on identifying critical constraints, and establishing pilot projects, and later replicating these pilots into programmes that become self-sustainable. The S

mall Projects Foundation has always emphasised that development needs to be measurable, whether in terms of asset creation or the results of training and capacity building. The Foundation aims at achieving the development of communities (including OVC, Young Women and Girls, Gender-Based Violence, families, CBOs, Leadership, and Education) who are committed to their own growth and development. The individual requires three main elements to better his/herself, namely:

1) Information about the available options.

2) Training in deciding on options, in taking up the opportunities/projects and in the technical skills necessary for project implementation.

3) Support in implementing projects/options and in post-project operations and maintenance. All programmes and projects of the Foundation are built on this fundamental axiom of helping individuals, groups, communities and organisations who have the necessary commitment, to grow and develop. To this end, the Small Projects Foundation operates on a request basis and always has a ‘sunset clause’ specifying that it will withdraw after a specified time.

CERTIFIED LIFE GARDENERS: GROWING SKILLS, CHANGING LIVES

Recently, our Project Coordinator, Nomfundiso Joseph, proudly handed over Thrive for Good - South Africa Organic Gardening certificates to our Social Employment Fund ambassadors at Equleni Primary School, Potsdam clinic, Sizimisele Clinic NU17, Zingisa clinic, and Siyabulela clinic NU16, marking an important milestone in their journey as certified Life Gardeners.

This achievement reflects more than just training completed; it represents growth, empowerment, and a commitment to building healthier and more sustainable communities. Through the 5-day Thrive For Good Organic Agriculture training, our Social Employment Fund ambassadors gained practical knowledge and hands-on experience in organic gardening, learning skills that continue to transform both their lives and the communities they serve.

Their flourishing gardens now stand as living proof that knowledge and skills work hand in hand. Using the techniques and methods learnt during the training, these ambassadors have successfully cultivated fresh and nutritious vegetables, contributing towards the fight against hunger, malnutrition, and unemployment.

Beyond agriculture, these ambassadors were also empowered through training in Skills to Care, Empathetic Care, Mother and Child, and Mental Well-Being, equipping them with the compassion, confidence, and knowledge needed to serve their communities holistically.

Today, these certified Life Gardeners are not only growing vegetables, but they are growing hope, dignity, self-reliance, and a brighter future for the communities around them.

STRENGTHENING FUTURES THROUGH DUAL-SENSORY SCREENING

Recently, our school-based dual sensory screening team travelled to Sterkstroom and Molteno to conduct vital eye and hearing screenings for learners across seven schools.

Together with our Social Employment Fund hearing ambassadors and an audiologist, a total of 405 children were screened for hearing difficulties at Usenathi Primary, Eluthuthu Primary, Sterkstroom Primary, Nomonde Primary, Nolitha Primary, Edelweiss Primary, and Nceba Primary Schools.

This initiative aimed to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, communicate, and thrive without the barriers caused by untreated hearing conditions.

Out of the learners screened:
• 126 learners did not pass the initial hearing screening and were referred to the in-house audiologist for further assessment.

• 40 learners were diagnosed with impacted earwax and received immediate treatment through manual curette scooping, irrigation, and cerumolytic drops, restoring both comfort and hearing ability.

• 4 learners were referred to the nearest clinic and hospital for comprehensive audiological assessment and management of middle ear pathology.

The impact of this intervention was immediate and meaningful. Learners who had struggled with blocked hearing were able to actively participate in class again, respond confidently to their teachers, and reconnect with their peers. Teachers and SPF participants expressed gratitude and relief knowing that children’s hearing health was being prioritized and protected.

This campaign highlights the importance of early detection and intervention. By addressing hearing challenges promptly, we not only restore hearing but also rebuild confidence, communication, and joy in children’s lives.

Every child deserves the chance to hear clearly — and through this initiative, many more now can.
