STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR THE PURPLE MOVEMENT
Duncan Village Drop-in Centre and Safe Park
Duncan Village Drop-in Centre stands in firm solidarity with the Purple Movement, a national call to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in South Africa. Over the past week, many across the country have turned their social media platforms purple, highlighting the urgency of protecting the lives, dignity, and safety of women and children.
The non-profit organisation Women for Change has played a significant role in bringing GBVF back into national focus, reminding us that the fight against violence is not only necessary but long overdue. As a community-based organisation working closely with children and families every day, we witness the deep and lasting impacts GBVF has on households, emotional wellbeing, and the development of young people.
As a centre committed to creating a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment, we express our unwavering support for this awareness movement. We join South Africans in amplifying the message that:
1. We stand with survivors of GBVF.
2. We honour those who have lost their lives to violence.
3. We advocate for stronger protection systems, accountability, and community-led safety initiatives.
4. We continue to provide a space where children and families can feel supported, heard, and protected.
While our centre will remain fully operational, we encourage our community to engage in awareness efforts, conversations, and acts of solidarity that bring attention to the urgent need to end gender-based violence in our communities.
Together, we can help build a future where every woman and child is safe, valued, and free from harm.
