Knowing Your Weapons
David ,this great king not only committed adultery but to cover his sin, he had the husband of the woman put on the front lines in battle destined for a certain death. Adultery and murder. Never a good combination. Yet, the Bible refers to David as a man after God’s own heart. David’s story is in the Bible for a reason.
Most of us can relate to him. There are times I can feel so connected to God, I feel I could win every battle he sends me to fight, and there are times I want to stay home. I have vulnerabilities and so do you. David makes it easier for me to say, “I’m vulnerable, and without the Holy Spirit within me, I am just one bad decision away from messing things up,” I have learned that when we act like we are not vulnerable to sin we run the greatest risk of falling. The enemy then has us right where he would like us to be.
In Psalm 18, David writes to God thanking Him for rescuing him from all of his enemies. David’s greatest weapon was his faith in our God. David uses powerful language as he describes God as the source of his strength. He calls God his stronghold, his deliverer, his rocky summit where he takes shelter, and his shield. At the brink of death, David cried out to God and God heard him. David describes God as thundering in the sky, reaching down from above and rescuing David from his strong enemy.
The enemies that fought strong against David were no match for God. With God’s help, David can charge against an army as God gives him strength and removes the obstacles in his way. David has the Greatest Warrior on his side and so do we. Our greatest weapon is in our Savior who is always more than enough.
David’s story tells me many things. First, like David, I am forgiven. There is no sin that is greater than Jesus' sacrifice. Nothing that I have done or will do is not covered by Jesus death. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, the same is true for each of us. Second, God provided everything David needed for victory. There was not a lack of weapons. Get this. David did not have to stockpile a bunch of weapons. When it came time for battle, God was there and provided all David needed. God alone delivered David from his enemies.
So, when you think you can’t, you are right. You can’t, but God can. Without Him, we would lose every battle, but with Him we are forever victorious. You are a warrior in the army of the Greatest Warrior. Never forget that truth
2 Samuel 11
[6] Then David sent word to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent Uriah to David. [7] When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the people were doing, and how the war was progressing. [8] Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and wash your feet (spend time at home).” Uriah left the king’s palace, and a gift from the king was sent out after him. [9] But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king’s palace with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.
[11] Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in huts (temporary shelters), and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Should I go to my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.”
[14] In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. [15] He wrote in the letter, “Put Uriah in the front line of the heaviest fighting and leave him, so that he may be struck down and die.”
