The morning of Wednesday 23rd September, saw a jolly band of thirty guests set off from the main gate of the Burman Bush Nature Reserve with one of our Senior Ranger and volunteer Christine Sole leading a guided walk for Senior Citizens.

A leisurely stroll through this remnant of coastal forest, along the iPithi Trail, listening to bird calls and discovering some of the reserve's flagship trees uMkhovoti (Chaetachme aristat), was followed by a walk up the old Burman Drive that runs through the centre of the reserve. The group had a short rest before tackling the slope to the viewing platform, aptly named Timber View! From there, the uMgeni River, the Blue Lagoon and the estuary mouth into the Indian Ocean were clearly visible. The important belt of mangrove forests of the Beachwood Mangrove Nature Reserve was noted as a buffer zone protecting human development from the sea. Purple -crested Turacos were very raucous and visible that morning!

All the walkers were enthusiastic about the experience and were keen for another nature experience in this special reserve within the city limits.

Celebrating our natural heritage in Burman Bush

September, besides heralding our hemisphere’s springtime, is designated ‘Heritage Month’ in South Africa.

While it is easy to connect our vibrant and diverse cultures to heritage, our country’s natural heritage of flora and fauna is often overlooked. Besides, an immense biodiversity of plant and animal species make it one of the world’s recognised biodiversity hotspots.

To celebrate this abundance, Burman Bush Nature Reserve is inviting Senior Citizens to enjoy a gentle guided walk through this 55 hectare coastal forest, a remnant of the original Durban Forest that once covered the Berea.

Join Senior Rangers and environmental education volunteer, Christine Sole on Wednesday 23 September 2026 for the opportunity of a relaxed and informative walk through this historic green space, just a few kilometers from Durban’s city centre.

Participants are asked to arrive at 08h45 for set off time at 09h00. The whole walk will be approximately one and a half hours, at a reasonable pace, with a brief stop at a picnic site midway. However, there will be a point of return to the start after half an hour’s stroll along a relatively flat path through the forest.

The second part of the morning comprises a walk up the old road viewing plants and listening to bird calls along the way. A moderate level of fitness is required.

A few highlights from our hike on Sunday. We were so happy to host Snare Aware to join us and share their work. They all work as volunteers to clear away snare traps that are often found in reserves. Thank you to everyone that joined our monthly hike on Sunday 5 July! We had a great time in the winter sun learning about how the reserve looks different in winter and why. We also embarked on a clean-up as we hiked through the green space. Spending time in nature is an easy, free way to bond, decompress, learn and feel connected to the planet! We look forward to see more faces at our next walk on 2 August 2026. It will be a special one!
