A striking feature of Kosi Bay is the continued use of traditional Thonga fishing techniques, The estuary mouth is zigzagged with a veritable maze of Thonga fish traps, which have been passed down from father to son for hundreds of years. The woven grass walls of these traps are designed to funnel passing fish into a central enclosure, which the fisherman checks daily to spear its contents. Small fish is able to swim out of these traps.
The Thonga fish traps “utshwayelo” are an excellent example of sustainable traditional management of natural resources.

MPAs of South Africa - Addo Elephant National Park MPA 🌊

Picking up where we left off last year as we continue along our incredible coastline exploring South Africa's Marine Protect Areas we are now in Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth.

Encounters with bottlenose dolphins, great white sharks, orcas and four whale species make Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area a hotspot for marine tourism and education.

Nelson Mandela Bay has the highest percentage of endemic marine invertebrates and seaweeds along the entire South African coastline.

Benefits:

🐠Protects estuary and supports the recovery of Kob
🪸Protects overexploited abalone
🐦Protects feeding area of endangered African Penguins and Cape Gannets
🐳Maintains attractions for marine ecotourism
