Child Protection Week πŸ’šπŸ’œ

What an incredible start to Child Protection Week in Ixopo!

Parents, practitioners, community leaders, and children came together to learn, connect, and commit to creating safer spaces for children.

One of the highlights was seeing children confidently share that they know their rights to safety and protection, as well as knowing to call 10111 in an emergency, showing that even young children can learn important safety skills.

Together, we sealed our commitment with painted handprints, pledging to protect and nurture every child.

A big well done to SmartStart South Africa TREE ECD Team for great teamwork and collaboration. πŸ‘πŸΎ

Child Protection Starts With Us

🧑 Every child deserves to feel safe, seen, heard and supported.

As we highlight Child Protection Week, let's remember that protecting children is everyone's responsibility. Whether you're a parent, practitioner, or a community member, your postive actions help shape a child's life.

Every child deserves to grow, learn and play in a safe environment.

If you suspect abuse or neglect, don't stay silent.

We are encouraged to hear the Minister acknowledge the voices of teachers across South Africa and the important need to reduce administrative burdens in education.

β€œEvery hour returned to teaching is an hour returned to children.”

We are especially proud of our Mmatsetshweu Ruby Motaung (Mam Ruby), who serves in an advisory role on the National Education and Training Council (NETC), contributing to conversations and proposals that support stronger, more effective learning environments for both educators and children.

At TREE, we know that wellness matters too 🌳

This past Sunday, our team laced up their takkies and took part in the East Coast Radio Big Walk.

From early morning commutes to crossing the finish line together, it was a great reminder that caring for our team is just as important as the work we do every day. πŸ’š

A big thank you to the TREE leadership for encouraging and supporting staff wellbeing.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) took centre stage at the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government Strategic ECD Dialogue, where government leaders, education experts and sector stakeholders gathered to explore how investing in the early years can help address South Africa’s growing skills gap and strengthen future economic participation in KZN.

The dialogue reinforced ECD as a critical foundation for lifelong learning, towards strengthening our nation's future prosperity.

As the Honourable Premier Ntuli shared:
β€œπΌπ‘›π‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘£π‘’π‘›π‘‘π‘–π‘œπ‘›π‘  π‘šπ‘’π‘ π‘‘ 𝑏𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑛 π‘Žπ‘‘ π‘“π‘œπ‘’π‘›π‘‘π‘Žπ‘‘π‘–π‘œπ‘› π‘β„Žπ‘Žπ‘ π‘’ 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙 π‘‘π‘œ π‘’π‘›π‘ π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘’ π‘™π‘’π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘›π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘  π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘’ π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘šπ‘’π‘‘ π‘€π‘–π‘‘β„Ž π‘ π‘˜π‘–π‘™π‘™π‘  π‘“π‘œπ‘Ÿ π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘“π‘’π‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘’.”

A standout moment for TREE was seeing our Director, Mama Ruby, serve as Programme Director for this high-level provincial dialogue, leading the proceedings, guide key discussions and facilitate conversations shaping the future of young children.

Mam Ruby's role reflects the growing recognition of experienced cultivated ECD leadership in influencing conversations around policy, practice and the future of the sector. πŸ’š

Why are we making our ECD centres jump through two hoops?

Right now, an ECD centre has to register twice: once for their building and once for their programmes. This "two-step" red tape keeps thousands of community ECD'S in the dark and without subsidies to provide our children with the rightful start to quality education.

But there is good news!

The Children’s Amendment Bill (2026) was just approved by Cabinet on 7 May.

This "Real Reform" will:
1. Replace the messy two-step process with ONE simple registration.
2. Focus on the quality of care. Helping more children in our communities get the R24/day subsidy.
3. Recognize that quality learning happens in informal-settlements (shacks), churches, and homes too.

The Department of Basic Education is ready. Now we need Parliament to pass the Bill and make this reform the law! βœοΈπŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

ECD Registration should be a bridge, not a barrier.
Real Reform for ECD
