We are honoured to announce a very special guest joining our upcoming 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻, 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 this week 5th and 6th May.

👑 𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗭𝘂𝗹𝘂 𝗸𝗮𝗭𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗶 — a 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 for young women and communities across South Africa.

Her work in advancing 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 strongly aligns with the mission of 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 through 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 — bridging gaps in education and ensuring that 𝗻𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱.

In partnership with the Pinetown KZNDOE 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, this programme supports teachers through a 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩-𝐛𝐲-𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 to bring 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 into the classroom with confidence.

First up is a 𝟐-𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩, where you’ll build 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 through hands-on, practical learning — setting you up for the full journey ahead. 💡

💻✨ 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹: 𝟭𝟬𝟱 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆

This year we 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝟭𝟬𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 Open Air School Durban, a remarkable institution that has spent more than a century ensuring that learners with special needs have access to education, opportunity, and dignity.

Founded in 1921, the school was originally designed so that children with medical conditions could learn in the “open air,” as fresh air was believed to support their recovery and wellbeing.

Today, under the 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮, the school continues to expand opportunities for its learners - including embracing the future through coding and robotics.

In partnership with Digital Democracy since 2024, Open Air School has introduced coding into the school timetable, ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to develop essential digital skills. The enthusiasm from teachers has been inspiring, showing real commitment to empowering their learners through technology.

Together we celebrate 105 years of impact, and a future where children are never defined by their disability, but by their creativity, curiosity, and potential.

💻✨ 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗳: 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀

For more than six decades, Fulton School for the Deaf has been opening doors for deaf learners in KwaZulu-Natal.

Founded in 1959, after Mr and Mrs J.K. Fulton generously donated their property to establish a school for deaf children in Natal, Fulton began with just three learners. Today it stands as an important centre of learning where deaf children receive quality education in South African Sign Language, empowering them to grow, learn, and thrive.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, Fulton School for the Deaf 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰.

What started with an information session quickly grew into a meaningful partnership. With facilitator Aaron Virasamy, ’s educators have received training and mentorship in coding and robotics. What began with some understandable uncertainty has transformed into confidence and excitement - with 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗺.

For deaf learners, who experience the world primarily through visual learning, coding and robotics offer a powerful and practical way to explore ideas, solve problems, and express creativity.

As Vivienne Shepherd, Departmental Head (Foundation Phase Acting), explains:

In an increasingly digital world, access to technology and digital skills is essential for young people to participate fully in society and the future of work.

Through our Digital Democracy programme, young people across South Africa are being introduced to coding, robotics, and digital problem-solving - empowering the next generation to create, innovate, and thrive.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲.

Home to 62 orphaned and vulnerable children, Ethelbert is committed to creating a nurturing environment where every child can grow beyond their circumstances and realise their potential. Recognising the importance of digital skills, Ethelbert became the first children’s home to join the Digital Democracy programme. Through our train-the-trainer approach, 𝟯𝟰 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, equipping them to bring digital learning directly to the children in their care.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, creating a vibrant space where young minds explore creativity, problem-solving, and innovation.

Thank you for your commitment to creating pathways for youth to thrive. 💙

Nosipho, the Youth Project Facilitator met with to discuss integrating Scratch, Robotics and hackathons in addition to the basic computer course curriculum.
Five staff members will attend specialized workshops to master the new hardware and software before teaching the students. This training phase is essential for building the expertise needed to lead these technical projects. Ultimately, the initiative aims to boost digital literacy and provide local youth with vital modern skills.

Through partnership with KCA Digital Democracy, we are proud to walk alongside these dedicated institutions that are opening new pathways through coding, robotics, and digital learning.

From schools for the deaf, to centres supporting children with physical and developmental challenges, educators and caregivers are embracing technology to ensure that their learners are not defined by their disabilities - but empowered by their potential.

Today we honour the teachers, principals, care workers, and leaders across Durban’s disability institutions whose commitment and perseverance are helping young people discover creativity, confidence, and new opportunities in the digital world.

Together we are opening doors where barriers once stood.

In Durban, organisations such as Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre and Open Air School work every day to nurture the potential of children who face significant life challenges. Founded in 1907, Ethelbert provides a safe and caring environment for children who have experienced abuse, abandonment, or neglect. Meanwhile, Open Air School, established in 1921, is one of South Africa’s pioneering schools supporting learners with physical disabilities from pre-primary through matric.

𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, and we are proud to walk alongside their dedicated teachers. In January, we proudly passed the custodianship of Blue Roof Life Space to YESS. Today, Keep a Child Alive is deeply present, active and future-focused across South Africa.
