Five years in a row, and our hearts are once again filled with pride!

For the 5th consecutive year, we had the privilege of participating in the KZN Regional ABAGILITY Maths Competition — and what an incredible day it was!

Six of the children from our ABAGILITY Access Programme held their heads high and proved, once again, that they deserve a seat at the table.

And they certainly made their mark, bringing home an incredible 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medal!

But the highlights didn’t stop there. Our incredible Luyanda, Grade 2, from our homeschooling programme, bravely stood up in front of a hall full of people and demonstrated what he had learnt. Watching his confidence and courage shine was truly something special.

This programme is about so much more than maths. It has instilled determination, confidence, resilience and a competitive spirit in these young learners — qualities that will serve them well throughout their journeys.

A very special thank you to Tracy, who, as always, ensures that our children have a place to shine.

To our incredible Bright Eyes team, who do all the work behind the scenes and never stop believing in the little ones we serve — thank you. Your dedication, passion and unwavering belief in these children make moments like this possible.

And to our incredible donors, thank you for making all of this possible. Your support creates opportunities for our children to participate, to be seen, to be challenged and to discover just how much they are capable of.

An Afternoon of Learning & Connection

The Bright Eyes Trust would like to sincerely thank Manny Moodley and his incredible team at Retina SA for hosting such an informative and engaging afternoon on Saturday, 29 August, at TapeAids for the Blind.

We were truly grateful for the opportunity to learn, network, and explore the wonderful products and services on demonstration. It was an afternoon filled with valuable insights, meaningful connections, and a shared passion for making a difference.

We encourage everyone to take some time to learn more about the incredible work being done by Retina SA. They are truly doing amazing work and making a meaningful impact in the lives of so many people.

What a Night!

Glitz and glamour are not usually words that describe a Bright Eyes outing, but boy oh boy — on Saturday, 29 August, that was definitely the case!

The Bright Eyes Trust would like to wish the KZN Blind and Deaf Society a very happy 90th birthday!

The spectacular celebration held at Sibaya was thoroughly enjoyed by all four of our Trustees. From delicious food and beautiful entertainment to a truly glamorous setting — and, of course, dancing late into the night — it was an evening to remember!

Congratulations to the KZN Blind and Deaf Society on an awesome 90th birthday celebration and a wonderful success!

Here’s to 90 incredible years and many more to come!

Making Moves!

This month, we had the wonderful opportunity to take part in online training with one of the shining stars from our homeschooling programme.

At just 9 years old, this young learner is beginning an exciting new chapter — transitioning from the Perkins Brailler to a refreshable Braille device.

For many, it may simply look like a new piece of equipment. But for him, it represents new possibilities, greater independence and another way to access the world of learning.

With his head held high, he asked questions, explored, experimented and fearlessly tackled this unfamiliar technology. Watching his confidence grow as he navigated something completely new was truly inspiring.

This is what creating opportunities looks like.

A huge thank you to Sensory Solutions for understanding that our children are the heartbeat of our organisation and that providing opportunities like these for our learners is of the utmost importance.

We are so excited to watch this young learner continue to grow, learn and make his moves!

The Mess Don’t Matter!

After many months of waiting, we are absolutely delighted to report that our mud kitchen has arrived!

Sensory play is such an important part of our day, and we are thrilled to finally have a designated messy play area where our learners can cook, concoct, experiment and create the biggest mess you’ve ever seen!

And yes… we’re pretty sure there will be mud everywhere. But the mess doesn’t matter when it comes with so much learning, creativity, exploration and joy.

For our visually impaired learners, sensory play opens up opportunities to explore the world through touch, texture, sound and imagination. It’s about getting hands-on, trying new things and, most importantly, having fun while learning.

To our loyal donors, thank you.

Your generosity — no matter how big or small — has a massive impact on the lives of the children we serve. This mud kitchen is more than just a place to play; it’s another space where our learners can explore, create, develop skills and simply be children.

So bring on the mud, the mess and the masterpieces!

Math Matters!
At Bright Eyes, we make every effort to ensure that what our children are learning is accessible, meaningful and engaging.

Over the past few months, we have been putting a strong focus on upgrading and expanding our maths resources, with one goal in mind: to give our children the tools they need to build a solid mathematical foundation.

For our visually impaired learners, accessible resources can make all the difference. Maths isn't just about numbers on a page — it's about understanding concepts, developing problem-solving skills, recognising patterns and building confidence.

We want our children to have the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts in ways that make sense to them, while developing skills that will support them both inside and outside the classroom.

Because math matters — and every child deserves the opportunity to learn it, understand it and enjoy it.

How do you put a price tag on an experience that simply couldn’t be taught adequately in a classroom? 💙

Our homeschooling programme’s trip to uShaka Marine World was filled with gasps of excitement, laughter, curiosity and a slur of unstoppable questions from our visually impaired learners.

For our learners, experiences that engage the other senses can make learning come alive in a completely different way. And this day was certainly one of those experiences.

From exploring the aquarium to having the opportunity to touch and experience things they would normally only learn about — like a shark’s jaw, its skin and eggs — the learning became real, tangible and unforgettable.

There were questions… so many questions! 😂
There was excitement. There was curiosity. And there were moments of pure wonder as the learners discovered the marine world through touch, sound, conversation and imagination.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible Bright Eyes team and our wonderful volunteers who helped make this experience possible. Your time, patience, care and willingness to create meaningful experiences for our learners means more than words can say. 💙

Remember bedtime stories? A little hand in yours, excited questions, colourful adventures, and the memories made together through the magic of reading.

Now imagine your child can’t see the pictures.

For many parents of blind and visually impaired children, sharing those same moments can feel overwhelming.

At Bright Eyes Trust, our Bright Beginnings Basic Braille Workshop equips parents and caregivers with the foundations of braille, giving them the confidence to read with their child, support their learning, and create those same treasured memories.

Because every child deserves the joy of a story, and every parent deserves the confidence to tell it.
