Remember bedtime stories? A little hand in yours, excited questions, colourful adventures, and the memories made together through the magic of reading.

Now imagine your child can’t see the pictures.

For many parents of blind and visually impaired children, sharing those same moments can feel overwhelming.

At Bright Eyes Trust, our Bright Beginnings Basic Braille Workshop equips parents and caregivers with the foundations of braille, giving them the confidence to read with their child, support their learning, and create those same treasured memories.

Because every child deserves the joy of a story, and every parent deserves the confidence to tell it.

Hit the Ground Running!

If anyone is wondering what Week 1 of Term 3 looks like at Bright Eyes Centre… it went by so quickly that if you blinked, you would have missed it!

From day one, our children were back in class, with gym and Abagility sessions up and running, a visit to one of our besties in the hospital, we packed and distributed food parcels to families in need, and if that wasn’t enough, 136 children were screened through the Bheka Project.

And that’s not all! Our team has also been working behind the scenes to prepare resources for our upcoming Braille Workshop.

Week 1 has been a clear indication of the exciting, impactful term ahead. We can’t wait to share more of the journey with you.

A Well-Deserved Celebration

As we reach the end of Term 2, it was important for us to celebrate and reward the hard work, dedication, and determination shown by the children in our After-School Programme.
This term, we decided to do something a little different.

When we heard that a restaurant not far from our centre offered a braille menu for visually impaired patrons, our learners were thrilled. The opportunity to visit a restaurant and experience the independence of choosing and ordering their own meals was one we simply couldn't pass up.

For many of our children, independence is a skill that must be intentionally nurtured and encouraged. Something as simple as reading a menu can become a powerful confidence-building experience when accessibility is made a priority.

A heartfelt thank you to Country Bake for creating such an inclusive space and for warmly welcoming our group. We spent a wonderful afternoon together celebrating the end of exams, enjoying delicious food, playing board games, sharing laughs, and making special memories.

Moments like these remind us that inclusion is about more than access. It's about belonging, confidence, dignity, and the freedom to participate fully in everyday experiences.

Well done to all our learners on a fantastic term. We are so proud of each and every one of you!

On the Move and Making a Difference

Our incredible Bheka Team hit the ground running after the long weekend, once again taking free eye screenings to children in underserved communities.

We are delighted to report that, in just three days, our team screened an amazing 619 learners, travelling across The Bluff, Malvern, and Wentworth to ensure children receive the eye care support they deserve.

Every school and preschool welcomed us with open arms, making our visits both productive and rewarding.

A special thank you to Romany Roberts of Sunbeam Preschool, who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure her community receives the support it needs. Your dedication to the children and families you serve is truly inspiring.

We would also like to thank Malvern Primary School for their professionalism and exceptional organisation. It was wonderful to work alongside educators who know their learners so well and are committed to helping them thrive.

Our Bheka Project visits are always a highlight. Each screening is an opportunity to identify vision challenges early, support learning, and make a meaningful difference in a child's future.

Here's to many more miles travelled and many more young lives impacted!

Show Them What We're Made Of

The staff and little ones at Bright Eyes Centre have been hard at work completing their Term 2 assessments, and we couldn't be prouder!

At Bright Eyes, assessments look different for every child because every child is unique. Our learners have a range of visual impairments, which means we adapt our assessment methods to suit their individual needs. For some, this means working entirely through tactile learning and braille. For others with residual vision, we encourage and support them to use their sight as effectively as possible.

This term, our children have truly blown us away with their incredible results. Their achievements are a reflection of their determination, resilience, and the countless hours of hard work put in by both our learners and dedicated staff.

Every milestone reached is a reminder that with the right support, belief, and opportunity, our children can achieve extraordinary things.

Congratulations to all our Bright Eyes stars. Your hard work is shining brightly, and we can't wait to see what you accomplish next!

Winter Warmer

There is a sweetheart out there who has lovingly taken the time to knit the most beautiful jerseys for our little ones.

With every ball of wool and every stitch carefully crafted, we feel the warmth, kindness, and love that has gone into this incredible gift. As the winter chill sets in, these jerseys will not only keep our children warm but will also remind them that they are cared for by a community with hearts as warm as the garments themselves.

Five Years On and Still Going Strong!

Five years into offering our Abagility Access Programme, it continues to be one of the most popular and impactful activities at our centre.

In the video above, one of our Grade 2 learners is enjoying his lesson—an experience that remains one of the highlights of his week. Watching his confidence, enthusiasm, and skills grow with each session is truly inspiring.

Having joined Bright Eyes with no previous intervention, this young lad continues to blow us away with his determination, resilience, and commitment to succeeding. His progress is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when children are given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities to thrive.

We are incredibly proud of how far he has come and look forward to seeing all that he will achieve in the future.

A Surprise Delivery That Made Our Day!

It’s incredible when the doorbell rings with a surprise delivery of something that is going to enhance the learning experience of the visually impaired children who move through our centre.

We are slowly building the Braille Unit of our dreams, and we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Eva Saunders, all the way in Australia, for gifting us a Braille Doodle from our wishlist.

This wonderful addition to our Braille Unit has already brought the children so much joy and excitement. I had to laugh when one of our Grade 1 learners found a special hiding place for it in her classroom to ensure she could always find it whenever she wanted to draw!

Moments like these warm our hearts. They remind us that learning can be both accessible and fun, and that the right resources can spark creativity, independence, and confidence in our learners.

🎥✨ Learning Together, Growing Together ✨🎥
This video beautifully captures two learners at very different stages of their Braille journey working side by side, supporting one another through the learning process.
Our Grade 1 learner is developing foundational Braille literacy skills using a Perkins Brailler, while our Grade 2 learner is progressing to contracted Braille using an Annie Braille device. Although they are at different levels, both are building confidence, independence, and a love for learning every day.
Moments like these remind us of the power of inclusive education and the importance of providing learners with the tools they need to reach their full potential.
