Wetlands are home to a huge and diverse population of plants and animal life.

They provide a range of important natural services, like providing clean water, strengthening climate resilience and acting as essential carbon sinks for our planet.

💰 But safeguarding them requires coordinated action from governments, businesses and communities.

🏞️ If we get it right, our wetlands and their inhabitants can continue to thrive, to the benefit of us all.

🌊 Cleaner Waters: Wetlands and Water Health

Wetlands are nature’s water treatment systems. They filter sediments, absorb excess nutrients, trap pollutants, and regulate water flows through complex biological, chemical and physical processes. When healthy, wetlands improve water quality, reduce treatment costs, strengthen ecosystem resilience, and provide safer water for communities.

In this webinar, we will explore:
• How wetlands function as natural filters
• The link between wetland restoration and water security
• Practical case studies from different regions
• Why protecting wetlands is a cost-effective investment in public health and climate resilience

📅 17 February 2026

⏰ 12:00 – 14:00 (UTC)

Speakers

• Chaturangi Wickramaratne — International Water Management Institute (IWMI)
• Mbongiseni Shongwe — Wildlands
• Leo Pietro Aritao — Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands / Living Lakes Academy

Healthy wetlands mean cleaner waters — for people and for nature.

This initiative is part of the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project, funded by BMUKN through IKI and supported by German Postcode Lottery, Kärcher, Lonza, Ground Lake, Georg Fischer Foundation, and many individual donors.
