We’re excited to share the first Spotted Ground Thrush sighting of the season in the Sibaya Forest!

This elusive and endangered bird has returned, and we need your help to learn more about its movements and behaviour. As part of an ongoing research collaboration between UKZN and The LionHeart Experience, several thrushes were safely caught and colour-ringed last winter. These rings allow researchers to identify individual birds and gather valuable data to support conservation efforts.

What to look out for:
Keep an eye out for Spotted Ground Thrushes with small coloured rings on their legs while walking or enjoying the forest.

Seen one? Let us know!
If you spot a ringed bird, please WhatsApp Dr Johan Gula on 071 190 0604 with:
• The date of your sighting
• The location
• A photo, if possible

Your contribution can make a real difference in protecting this special species. Thank you for helping us support conservation in Sibaya!

Keeping Sibaya’s coastline beautiful.

Following the recent downpour, extra effort has gone into clearing debris washed up along the beaches in the Sibaya precinct.

Alongside this, rehabilitation work continues in the new forest areas, supporting the ongoing restoration of these important natural spaces.

Did you know …

Right here in the Sibaya Coastal Forest, the remarkable Buffalo Thorn quietly grows among the indigenous vegetation. Known in Afrikaans as the ‘wag-’n-bietjie’, this hardy tree is famous for its paired thorns (one straight and one hooked) that love to snag unsuspecting sleeves and make you quite literally wait a bit!

The Buffalo Thorn is drought-resistant, often used as natural live fencing, and holds deep cultural and medicinal significance across Southern Africa.

Grassland Management in Action!

Preservation requires persistence - and the focus right now is on strengthening our grasslands. Efforts are underway to target and remove stubborn Spanish Reed, creating space for indigenous grasses to flourish and restore the natural balance of these ecosystems.

Healthy grasslands mean stronger biodiversity, improved resilience, and landscapes that thrive.

Did you know one of the hidden gems of Sibaya Forest is the magnificent Iron Plum tree?

A slow-growing, evergreen forest tree indigenous to KZN, these trees are often found in the understory of coastal forests. They are known for their hard, durable wood, dark green leaves, and small, egg-shaped fruits, which are enjoyed by birds, monkeys, and even people.

Next time you’re wandering among the giants in Sibaya Forest, keep an eye out for their seasonal bounty. Remember to upload any new observations to the iNaturalist app: https://www.inaturalist.org/

🌿 Sibaya Beach Restored After Storm Debris

The storm on 23 November brought in significant debris along the shoreline below the Sibaya Coastal Forest.

The Sibaya Conservation Trust team has since completed a thorough clean-up, removing washed-up waste and restoring the natural beauty of the beach.

The coast is now looking clean, refreshed, and ready for the weekend — a big thank you to the team for their continued care of this sensitive environment.

Let’s all do our part to keep our coastline pristine.

Clearing, Controlling and Caring for the Sibaya Forest 🦋🌿

The Alien Eradication Team has remained active on the ground, focusing on clearing new invasive growth across the grasslands. This work is especially important as the warmer weather accelerates vegetation regrowth, which, if unmanaged, can threaten indigenous flora and disrupt the natural balance of the area.

Take a walk through the forest this weekend and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.
