FROM CASCADE PERFORMANCE TO COMMUNITY ACTION 🤝🏽💙

Today we had the opportunity to bring the community perspective into the provincial consultation on strengthening the response to End AIDS in Children in KwaZulu-Natal.

From the ground, one message is clear:

Behind every number is a child, a caregiver and a story.

Our work across communities has shown the power of partnerships with ECD centres, Homework Centres, NPOs, CBOs, community forums and health services in helping us identify children who may otherwise be missed.

These platforms give us an opportunity to:
🔹 Engage caregivers
🔹 Strengthen treatment literacy
🔹 Provide psychosocial support
🔹 Identify challenges early
🔹 Link children and caregivers to appropriate services
🔹 Build stronger referral pathways between community organisations and DOH

The experience in eThekwini and iLembe demonstrates what is possible when organisations work together rather than in isolation.

But the consultation also highlighted an important reality: finding the child is only the beginning. We need referral systems that work, stronger NPO–DOH collaboration, formal support mechanisms and continued follow-up to ensure that every child reaches the care and support they need.

Our call is simple:

FIND EVERY CHILD.
SUPPORT EVERY CAREGIVER.
CONNECT EVERY REFERRAL. 💙

Because End AIDS in Children is not only a health-system goal — it is a community responsibility.



This community-centred approach is consistent with existing child-focused HIV work in KwaZulu-Natal, where community structures, household engagement, disclosure support and linkage to care are recognised as important parts of reaching children

Strengthening the Children’s Sector is essential to ensuring that the voices, rights, and needs of our children and adolescents remain at the centre of the HIV response.

As we move toward South Africa’s 2025 World AIDS Day theme, *“Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response”*, this workshop was a powerful step toward revitalising the Children’s Sector within the district — building stronger collaboration, improved coordination, and a unified commitment to child-centred HIV services.

The KZN Provincial Children’s Sector extends heartfelt gratitude to Sheena, Dr Neel, Ms Hooper, CHIVA Africa, the uMzinyathi District AIDS Council, Civil Society, and all partners, leaders, and community structures who continue to champion a safer, healthier future for children in uMzinyathi and beyond.

Together, we can make lasting change. 🌍✨
