SPCA Amanzimtoti Edu-Paw

SPCA Amanzimtoti Edu-Paw Teaching children basic canine care and instilling love and compassion for animals, to turn the tide of neglect & cruelty.

The Problem : Animal Rescue shelters like SPCA are struggling under the load, trying to quell the tide of unwanted, abandoned, abused and neglected animals. Many of those who are bringing dogs to the Spca are from the townships and rural areas. Due to the lack of knowledge and resources the dogs that they bring are often malnourished, full of worms, mange and the breeding continues. The Aim : To a

ddress the problem at its source through education. The Strategy : We run a 8 week programme in canine care. We meet every Saturday morning from 8.30 - 11.30am. We take 12 children and their dogs through the programme dealing with every aspect of animal welfare bringing about a full understanding of the responsibility of owning and caring for a dog. Also, instilling in them a love and compassion for their animals which in time will be perpetuated as they become adults and will in turn teach their children to be responsible pet owners. At the end of the 8 weeks we have a graduation ceremony and party for the kids to acknowledge they have successfully completed the programme. We then take the next 12 kids on the waiting list. The Practicalities : Each dog receives a collar and lead, deworming, food, food bowls, blankets, tug toys, and brushes and referred to the monthly clinic for vaccinations and sterilization

How you can help us :We are appealing for support from the community and businesses to contribute toward this program . We need donations of collars and leads as many of the children bring their dogs with rope tied tightly around their necks or even chains. Sponsorship for the printing of our educational material. Donations of dog food, food bowls, shampoo, dip, brushes, blankets for winter. Sponsorship toward the cost of sterilizing, vaccinating and deworming every dog in the programme.

"There can be no greater gift than that of giving one's time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return." — Nelson Mandela

As we reflect on Youth Day this week, we are especially grateful for the many young people who have given that precious gift to Edu Paw over the years. So many of our volunteers began serving when they were just teenagers, faithfully dedicating their time, energy, and compassion to helping children and dogs in their communities.

Their commitment, kindness, and willingness to serve have helped shape countless lives—both human and canine. We honour and celebrate each volunteer who has walked this journey with us. Thank you for being part of building a kinder future.

Happy Youth Day! 🇿🇦
Today, we celebrate and honour the incredible young volunteers who have served Edu Paw over the years. Many joined us when they were just 13 years old and faithfully gave their time, energy, and compassion right through to their matric years.
These young people have made a real difference in the lives of children, dogs, and their communities. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and for the kindness, responsibility, and leadership they have shown along the way.

In communities where life can be hard, the relationship between a child and a dog often reveals something profound: the capacity to care for another living being despite having so little themselves.

One of the important things we teach at Edu Paw, is eye contact.
This is vital between the owner and his dog, it's not only essential for effective learning, but it also has so many therapeutic benefits.
/
Loving eye contact between a human and dog increases the level of oxytocin in the brain of both species. This exercise improves empathy, decreases angry responses, increases trustworthy behaviour, improves recovery from stress, and reduces anxiety and depression.

This young man from our programme is clearly very proud of his fur-friend, who is just happy to doze off in the sunshine while they wait for the class to commence.

Many of the dogs in our programme still don’t have proper collars or leads. If you have any spare ones to donate, even second-hand, they would make such a difference. They can be dropped off at the Spca office clearly marked "For Edu Paw". We'd be so grateful.
