The Problem : Animal Rescue shelters like SPCA are struggling under the load, trying to quell the tide of unwanted, abandoned, abused and neglected animals. Many of those who are bringing dogs to the Spca are from the townships and rural areas. Due to the lack of knowledge and resources the dogs that they bring are often malnourished, full of worms, mange and the breeding continues. The Aim : To a
ddress the problem at its source through education. The Strategy : We run a 8 week programme in canine care. We meet every Saturday morning from 8.30 - 11.30am. We take 12 children and their dogs through the programme dealing with every aspect of animal welfare bringing about a full understanding of the responsibility of owning and caring for a dog. Also, instilling in them a love and compassion for their animals which in time will be perpetuated as they become adults and will in turn teach their children to be responsible pet owners. At the end of the 8 weeks we have a graduation ceremony and party for the kids to acknowledge they have successfully completed the programme. We then take the next 12 kids on the waiting list. The Practicalities : Each dog receives a collar and lead, deworming, food, food bowls, blankets, tug toys, and brushes and referred to the monthly clinic for vaccinations and sterilization
How you can help us :We are appealing for support from the community and businesses to contribute toward this program . We need donations of collars and leads as many of the children bring their dogs with rope tied tightly around their necks or even chains. Sponsorship for the printing of our educational material. Donations of dog food, food bowls, shampoo, dip, brushes, blankets for winter. Sponsorship toward the cost of sterilizing, vaccinating and deworming every dog in the programme.
