Sakhumuzi Gwala, Coordinator of Bread Crumbs Bakery Co-operative in Zwelibomvu, Ward 100, shares the inspiring journey from baking bread on a household stove to running a fully equipped community bakery and creating jobs in the local community.

Bread Crumbs is one of the success stories of eThekwini Municipality’s Community Bakeries Programme, which provides infrastructure, equipment, training and operational support to help co-operatives grow, create jobs and strengthen local economies.

Joy and celebration filled the room at the City’s Umkhumbane Entrepreneurial Support Centre, as 70 graduates from the 3-month and 12-month furniture making and upholstery programmes received their SAQA-accredited NQF Level 2 qualifications.

The programme equips participants with technical, business, and entrepreneurial skills, opening doors to employment and self-employment.

Many graduates have already secured jobs, while others have established their own businesses, creating opportunities for others.

Since 2019, more than 250 beneficiaries have been empowered through this life-changing initiative.

Today’s graduation celebrates resilience, determination, and the power of skills development to transform lives, strengthen communities, and grow the local economy.

💁🏽‍♀️💆🏽‍♀️💇🏽‍♂️ A full house and active engagement marked the launch of 's Hair and Beauty Salon Business Registration Programme at Umlazi V Hall on 25 June.

More than 600 salon owners and industry stakeholders attended the session, which was hosted to support business compliance, strengthen the sector, and connect salon operators with licensing, funding, and business development opportunities.

Following the overwhelming response, the City will roll out the registration drive to other regions across eThekwini during July.

Hair and Beauty Salon businesses are invited to attend the official launch and registration drive hosted by eThekwini Municipality's Business Licensing Division on 25 June 2026 at uMlazi V Hall, from 09:00 to 15:00.

This initiative aims to support the formalisation of Hair and Beauty Salon businesses and establish a database that will assist in promoting growth and development within the sector.
