Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) represent a novel approach to HIV treatment, prevention, and cure strategies. Recent studies have demonstrated that bNAbs can effectively neutralize a broad range of HIV strains. There is still work to be done, but the future of bNABs looks promising!

💊Folic acid is important before and during early pregnancy because it helps form your baby’s brain and spine, reducing the risk of serious birth defects like spina bifida and anencephaly.

🤰🏾Since these develop in the first few weeks—often before you know you’re pregnant—and many pregnancies are unplanned, taking folic acid early is key to protecting your baby’s health.

đź’ŠAlong with taking folic acid, to ensure a healthy pregnancy, please plan ahead. If you're thinking about becoming pregnant, start taking folic acid at least 1 month before conception (with the consultation of a nurse or doctor). Continue taking folic acid during pregnancy.

🥬Also make sure you eat folate-rich foods such as leafy greens, beans, or oranges.

👩🏾‍⚕️Remember, before taking any multivitamins, you have to consult a healthcare provider. This means attending antenatal visits as soon as you miss your periods, and continuing to attend until you deliver.

Deputy President Honourable Paul Mashatile, accompanied by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla, delivered the keynote address at the closing ceremony of the 9th South African TB Conference in Johannesburg, which brought together more than 1,000 national and regional delegates from across sectors.

Aligned with the conference theme, “Vuka, Let’s Unite to End TB,” the Deputy President’s address emphasised the urgent need to move away from fragmented efforts towards a more coordinated, integrated, and multisectoral response to TB. He called for renewed unity of purpose across government, civil society, communities, and development partners, underscoring that collaboration is essential to accelerating progress towards ending TB.

The discussions throughout the conference further rekindled the spirit of collective action, characterised by a shared “unity of purpose and resolve,” reinforcing the message that unity is not only symbolic but a practical driver of results in the fight against TB. Together, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening partnerships, addressing the social determinants of TB, and advancing a whole-of-society response to end the disease.

The Gauteng Department of Health is rolling out Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injectable that provides protection for up to six months. We are at Stanza Bopape Community Health Centre in Mamelodi, one of 133 health facilities across the province now offering Lenacapavir.

The response from the Mamelodi community has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents coming out in large numbers to take proactive steps towards protecting their health. By 14h00, more than 90 individuals had already been initiated, with the facility expected to surpass 100 initiations by the end of the day.

Members of the public are reminded that while Lenacapavir is highly effective in preventing HIV, it does not replace the use of condoms, which remain essential for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.

World AIDS Day – Clermont Clinic

As part of World AIDS Day, ECF and Clermont Clinic are committed to strengthening awareness about HIV, promoting prevention, and supporting effective treatment and adherence. Our focus includes empowering the community with accurate information on HIV transmission, encouraging regular testing, and promoting proven prevention methods such as condom use, PrEP, PEP and safe sexual practices.

We continue to support individuals living with HIV through access to timely treatment, viral load monitoring, and adherence counselling. This aligns with the global 95–95–95 strategy, which aims for:

95% of all people living with HIV to know their status,

95% of those diagnosed to be on sustained antiretroviral therapy,and

95% of those on treatment to achieve viral suppression.

Through collaboration, community engagement, and quality healthcare services, ECF and Clermont remain dedicated to reducing new infections, improving health outcomes, and working towards an HIV-free generation.

Today, we shine a spotlight on the incredible team at our ECF Clinical Research Site based at Victoria Mxenge Hospital! This site is a hub of innovation and dedication, with a special focus on advancing healthcare for pediatric populations through clinical trials that make a real difference.

Behind every successful study is a committed team, and at Victoria Mxenge, we are proud to have a multidisciplinary group of professionals working hand-in-hand to deliver world-class research.
