Scientists are calling CRISPR one of the most revolutionary medical technologies ever created, and new research is giving fresh hope in the fight against HIV. Researchers have successfully used CRISPR gene editing to target and remove HIV DNA hidden inside infected human cells during laboratory studies. The results are drawing global attention because HIV has long been difficult to fully eliminate once it integrates into the body’s genetic material.
CRISPR works like molecular scissors that can precisely cut specific sections of DNA. In recent experiments, scientists were able to identify and remove fragments of HIV genetic code from infected cells, helping stop the virus from replicating again. This approach is different from traditional HIV treatments because current medications usually suppress the virus rather than completely removing it from the body.
Experts caution that this research is still in experimental stages and is not yet a confirmed permanent cure for HIV in humans. More clinical testing is still required to prove long term safety and effectiveness. Even so, researchers believe gene editing could eventually transform how viral diseases are treated in the future.
