This week, our 2026 Bindzu Youth Fund Programme cohort came together for a milestone worth celebrating.

It was a moment to recognise the young entrepreneurs who made it to the final stage of the programme, and the businesses that stood out for their growth, potential and readiness to take the next step.

A huge congratulations to the three entrepreneurs named as this year’s Bindzu Youth Fund winners:

🏆 1st place: Kamogelo Selepe, founder of ArcaneEdge
Kamogelo received the R1 million top prize for ArcaneEdge, an AI-powered marketing technology business that helps brands test campaign ideas before committing their advertising spend. The business stood out for its innovation, strong growth and commercial potential.

🥈 2nd place: Khaya Burwana, founder of Agrikey Farming
Khaya received the R250,000 second-place prize for Agrikey Farming, a hydroponic farming business supplying retailers, communities and informal traders. Through the programme, Khaya strengthened the business’s irrigation system, supporting better water efficiency and future growth.

🥉 3rd place: Makatu Tshivhula, founder of The Light Candles
Makatu received the R150,000 third-place prize for The Light Candles, a local manufacturing business producing long-lasting candles for retail, religious and lifestyle markets. Through the Bindzu Youth Fund programme, Makatu strengthened production capacity, built inventory and opened up new retail distribution opportunities.

This moment follows an 11-month programme created to support young South African entrepreneurs with funding, mentorship, business development support and investment-readiness training.

From 1,692 applications across South Africa, 27 entrepreneurs were selected, with three businesses representing each province. After months of learning and development, the journey moved from 27 businesses to the Top 10 finalists, and finally to the Top 3 winners.

To Kamogelo, Khaya and Makatu, congratulations on this incredible achievement. And to every entrepreneur who took part in this year’s Bindzu Youth Fund programme, thank you for showing what is possible when young business owners are given the tools, guidance and opportunity to grow.

Every day, we see what becomes possible when young people are given the right support.

Hope4Youth is our national initiative that helps fund the work we do with young people across education, skills development and entrepreneurship. It brings together contributions from customers, partners and donors to make this work possible.

Through this, we’re able to support young entrepreneurs as they start and grow their businesses, empower learners in schools, and work with young people as they build skills and gain employment experience.

For many young people, what’s missing isn’t potential. It’s access to the right support, the right experience, and the right opportunities. Hope4Youth helps change that.

Here’s how you can be a part of it:
• Add a small donation when you pay at the till in any Mr Price store
• Donate online: https://www.mrpricefoundation.org/donate/

To date, more than 319,000 customers have contributed across 1,500+ stores, helping us reach over 22,000 young people in FY2025 alone.

Your contribution is part of something bigger. Thank you to everyone who continues to support this work.

Funders don’t only want to know what your business does. They want to know whether it can survive, grow and repay.

That was one of the key lessons from our second Funding Readiness Masterclass, Building a Strong Funding Case, hosted by Mr Price Foundation in partnership with Startup Grind.

Led by Chuma Koyana, the session helped entrepreneurs better understand what funders are really looking for when they review a business case. It also reminded entrepreneurs that a strong idea needs to be supported by clear information, realistic numbers and a business model that shows how the business can work.

Some of the key things funders want to see include:

1️⃣ Market demand: Is there a real need for your product or service?
2️⃣ Ex*****on capability: Do you have the right leadership, experience and know-how to deliver?
3️⃣ Scalability: Can the business grow beyond where it is now?
4️⃣ Risk mitigation: Have you thought through the risks and how the business can adapt?
5️⃣ Ability to repay: Can the business use funding to generate income and remain sustainable?

Many entrepreneurs know they need funding to grow, but it is not always clear what funders need to see before they can say yes. This session helped break that down in a way that entrepreneurs can start applying as they strengthen their funding cases.

Through the Funding Readiness Masterclass Series, we are helping young entrepreneurs better understand what funders look for, strengthen their applications, and build businesses that are ready for growth.

If you missed this session, keep an eye on our pages for updates on upcoming Funding Readiness Masterclasses.

For many entrepreneurs, one of the hardest parts of the funding journey is knowing how to turn a good business idea into a funding case that others can clearly understand and support.

In our next masterclass, Chuma Koyana will draw on his experience across corporate finance, private equity, public sector management and governance, and business advisory to guide young entrepreneurs on how to build a stronger funding case.

With over 30 years of experience, his work includes SMME funding, blended finance, strategic business development, as well as entrepreneurial development and mentorship across organisations including the IDC, ECDC, and KPMG. His perspective is especially valuable for a session like this, which will explore what a strong funding case is, why it matters, and how entrepreneurs can better understand their business model and communicate it more clearly.

If you’re a young entrepreneur looking for better insight into how to position your business for funding, this session is for you:

Date: 7 May 2026
Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm
Place: Microsoft Teams

Children are introduced to so much in the early years of school, and learning to read plays an important part in helping them make sense of it. It helps children begin building core skills and engage more confidently with learning from the start.

In Hammarsdale, literacy forms part of the work we do on the ground through EduRise. Through this work, we support early learning through literacy and numeracy development, learner support, educator development, school leadership support, and the provision of resources that help strengthen teaching and learning in under-resourced schools.

EduRise is our education development work, focused on addressing the root causes of poor education and skills gaps in the early years of schooling. This forms part of our wider commitment to empower 500,000 youth by 2035. Over time, this work has reached 149,624+ learners, supported the development of 4,543+ educators, and been backed by R157.8 million invested since 2013.

This matters because literacy in the early years is shaped by more than reading alone. It is shaped by what happens in the classroom, the support teachers receive, and the school environment children learn in every day. It also speaks to a bigger picture of what children need in these early years, which the final Roots and Shoots study results, focused on the realities shaping early childhood learning and literacy, will help bring into even sharper focus.

Too often, the funding conversation starts with “How do I get funding?” before there is enough clarity on how the business actually works.

A potential funder does not solely rely on the numbers. They need a comprehensive understanding of the business to make an informed investment decision. This includes insights into the business' market, value proposition, revenue streams, cost structures and key partners; all of which helps them assess growth potential and the viability of the investment. Without that clarity, even a business with strong potential can struggle to make a convincing case.

We’ve partnered with Startup Grind to bring you the Funding Readiness Masterclass Series, and the next session is titled ‘Building a Strong Funding Case’. In this session, we’ll unpack what a compelling funding case is, why it is important, the business model canvas and how it can help unlock funding, and some of the common mistakes entrepreneurs make when trying to position their businesses for support. The session is designed to help youth-owned businesses to present themselves to funders with greater clarity and confidence.

The session will be hosted by Chuma Koyana, whose experience spans corporate finance, private equity, public sector management and governance, and business advisory. With over 30 years of experience, his work includes SMME funding, blended finance, strategic business development, as well as entrepreneurial development and mentorship across organisations including the IDC, ECDC, and KPMG.

If you’re preparing your business for funding opportunities or planning to raise capital, this session is designed for you:

The Funding Readiness Masterclass Series is designed to help bridge the gap between youth-owned businesses and the funding ecosystem. It supports entrepreneurs in building stronger funding readiness.

A few weeks ago, we officially launched the Waste Innovation Challenge, a national entrepreneurship development programme that invites university students and recent graduates to rethink how they see waste by empowering them to design solutions that turn waste into value.

Since the launch, we received almost 1300 expressions of interest from youth who are interested in building viable green businesses. We’ve been reviewing and shortlisting the submissions received to identify those that will be taking part in the challenge.

Selected participants from all 26 public universities will take part in development workshops which will help them develop viable ideas. The top 20 ideas will undergo an intensive bootcamp in preparing for a national showcase where the top 5 businesses will be selected for funding. The five winning ideas will get a share of R245 000 in seed funding, along with mentorship, business development support and exposure to partners and potential investors.

This initiative responds to a real challenge in our country, which generates more than 100 million tonnes of waste each year. Most of it is still landfilled or stockpiled, and only a portion of collected plastic makes it back into usable materials.

As shared at the launch by our Executive Director, Octavius Phukubye, “Waste is not just an environmental crisis; it’s an untapped business opportunity. By engaging youth to transform plastic waste into viable products, services, or technologies, this competition tackles two of the biggest challenges we face, unemployment and environmental degradation.”

Octavius also noted, “The Mr Price Foundation sees itself as more than just funders. We see ourselves as catalytic investors and ecosystem architects. Our purpose is to create lasting economic opportunities for young people by building skills, strengthening employability and enabling entrepreneurship.”

We’re looking forward to the next phase of the programme and we welcome all the participants who will be moving into the upcoming online workshops.
