Building a global movement to help solve the climate crisis. 350.org’s online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by people in over a 185 countries. These events were supported by Cycles 4 Justice, The Green Hub, DSW, KZN Waste Minimisation Forum, WESSA, Old Mutual & Botanic Gardens, Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT), Diakonia Council of Churc
hes, Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI), South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) EarthLife Africa and EcoPeace. In 2011, the theme was 'Moving Planet', a day to move beyond fossil fuels, and figure out the most meaningful ways to make the climate message move – on bicycles, by marching, dancing, running, canoeing, skateboarding ... spurring real change and putting into action our demand for a future free from fossil fuels and dangerous climate change.
350.org’s campaigns for 2012 were 'Connect the Dots' and 'Climate Impacts Day' which were held on 5/5/12. Globally, actions were organised to CONNECT THE DOTS between climate change and extreme weather. Thousands of people around the world protested, educated, documented, volunteered and demonstrated their support for communities on the front lines of the climate crisis. DO THE MATH & STOP FOSSIL FUEL SUBSIDIES: This is a major new fight to end the billions of dollars in subsidies the fossil fuel industry receives each year. To move to renewable energy like wind and solar, we're going to need to end the subsidies to an industry that's already making record-breaking profits and start investing in a clean energy economy that doesn't destroy our planet. In November 2012, Bill McKibben and 350.org hit the road to build a movement strong enough to change the terrifying math of the climate crisis. The Do the Math Tour was a massive success, with sold out shows in every corner of the U.S.The tour is now over, but the campaign it launched, of campus divestment in the fossil fuel industry is beginning to gain ground. CAMPUS DIVESTMENT: We want College and University Presidents and Boards (as well as Religious and Pension funds) to:
● Immediately freeze any new investment in fossil fuel companies
● Divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.
200 publicly-traded companies hold the vast majority of the world’s proven coal, oil and gas reserves. Our demands to these companies are simple, because they reflect the stark truth of climate science:
● They need immediately to stop exploring for new hydrocarbons.
● They need to stop lobbying in Washington and state capitols across the country to preserve their special breaks.
● Most importantly, they need to pledge to keep 80% of their current reserves underground forever. To find out more, go to http://gofossilfree.org/
Everyone is welcome to become involved in 350 and help drive these campaigns so please feel free to post your ideas and suggestions.
