AfricaIgnite Africa!Ignite is a rural development agency that works across KwaZulu-Natal. Our Vision

Our vision is a self-reliant Africa alight with energy and innovation.

Our purpose is to create partnerships with rural and marginalised communities to facilitate their fair participation in the economy and society, and to help make their voices heard. Our history
Africa!Ignite was established in 2004 by MiET Africa, a leading Southern African education development agency based in KwaZulu-Natal; to pursue community development work complementary to MiET Africa’s foc

us on schools and formal education. Rural development leadership
Africa!Ignite’s access to a unique footprint of 120 development nodes across KwaZulu-Natal and our team’s extensive experience of working in rural areas over more than a decade have helped us to establish leadership in rural development. We provide extensive enterprise-development support to hundreds of youths and adults; particularly women, across KwaZulu-Natal’s rural areas. We support:

•Rural crafters (about 1 000, mostly women of whom the majority are mothers and grandmothers),
•Rural research field workers (about 40),
•Newspaper correspondents and story-tellers (20),
•Water and sanitation outreach workers (120) and local historians/tour guides,
•Rural retail entrepreneurs and tourist guides

Africa!Ignite has paid more than R16 million to rural entrepreneurs since 2008, and in the past two years paid R2 million to rural women crafters. We also have extensive experience in communication and creative story-telling. We help communities, adults and children to tell their own stories and showcase these stories through different creative media. Some clear development principles underpin our work:
•We believe in genuine partnerships. We value the funding, investment and support partners who enable us to achieve our purpose; as well as our rural beneficiary partners who welcome us into their communities and who partner with us in igniting potential. We seek to nurture all these partnerships.

•We believe in the people of our continent, our country and our province. Our aim is to help them to reach their potential, so that they can ignite the continent’s energy, creativity and economic power.

•We do not believe in handouts. We salute those agencies who help those who cannot help themselves. Our purpose; however, is to create opportunities and remove obstacles for individuals and groups in rural and marginalised areas who have the will and the drive to help themselves and their communities.

On World Entrepreneurs' Day, Africa!Ignite celebrates the small business owners who turn ideas into action and create meaningful change in their communities.

Entrepreneurship is about more than building a business — it is about resilience, creativity, solving challenges and creating opportunities for a better future.

We honour the entrepreneurs who continue to contribute to Africa’s vibrant economy.

1.5-hectare community garden is steadily taking shape, creating opportunities for food production, income generation and greater food security.

The team has made significant progress, clearing the garden and bringing more land into production. After an unsuccessful maize crop due to water shortages, they turned their focus to spinach — planting 16,500 bunches in April and initially watering the crops by hand until the first harvest.

With support from The Valley Trust, an irrigation system was then installed, drawing water from Inanda Dam and providing capacity for up to 20 sprinklers. This has made a significant difference to the garden's potential.

The team planted a further 10,000 spinach seedlings in June, followed by cabbage seedlings in July. They are now producing and selling around 1,000 bunches of spinach every week, with an ambitious goal of reaching 5,000 bunches per week within the next two years.

Looking ahead, the team hopes to expand the garden by at least another hectare, produce their own seedlings to reduce costs, and establish on-site composting to improve soil fertility.

It's a wonderful example of how investment, skills and community commitment can turn land into a sustainable source of food, income and opportunity. 🌿💚

Africa!Ignite is leading a project currently being implemented in Inanda, kwaZulu-Natal. The project is funded by the Industrial Development Corporation as a Social Employment Fund (SEF) project.

We’re proud to share that Africa!Ignite CEO, Dr Niki Glen, recently spoke at the 3rd Annual International Women’s Multisector Conference 2026, bringing together women from across Africa and a diverse range of sectors.

Dr Glen spoke about Africa!Ignite’s Sustainable Development Model and how it has been strengthened through our work as an implementation partner in the IDC Social Employment Fund (SEF) programme.

Through our WOWBIZ and WOWZULU models, Africa!Ignite creates local ecosystems of support for community businesses, including tourism enterprises, crafts, small-scale farming and other rural businesses. The SEF programme has enabled us to strengthen these ecosystems across the communities where we work, creating skills, experience, enterprise opportunities and stronger pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

The potential extends far beyond individual projects. The collective work of SEF implementation partners has generated an enormous body of evidence about what is working across communities throughout South Africa. The SEF Public Evidence Portal currently brings together data from 47 implementing SIPs, 248 source documents, 8,416 evidence data points and all nine provinces.

As Dr Glen shared, the opportunity now is to learn from this collective experience, strengthen what works and create models that can continue delivering impact beyond individual programmes.

“We believe that every community needs a WOWBIZ centre.”
— Dr Niki Glen, CEO, Africa!Ignite

It was a privilege to contribute to conversations around women’s leadership, the green economy, ESG, investment, technology and sustainable wealth, alongside inspiring speakers and women from across the continent.

Thank you to the organisers and sponsors of IWMC 2026 for creating a space for these important conversations.

A behind-the-scenes look at Tina in the office, carrying out quality assurance on our latest order of Jonsson shirts.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with Jonsson to produce staff uniforms for one of their largest clients. Orders like these have a much bigger impact than the finished product — they create income and opportunities for rural women in our partner communities.

It is always exciting to see the work our ladies produce, but even more rewarding is watching them grow in confidence, skills and independence through the income they earn.

From production to quality control, every shirt tells a story of opportunity. 💛

Clearing litter from the Waterfall-to-Waterfall Hiking Trail located in the Inanda region. The route treks through the spectacular valleys of Lower Molweni and connects the Enanda Adventure Park on the Inanda Dam to the heights of Inanda Mountain. Hikers navigate steep, rocky terrain using a series of built wooden ladders to scramble past large river boulders. The path is part of a community-focused eco-tourism initiative managed by Green Corridors, showcasing the natural beauty of the local area.

Africa!Ignite is leading a project currently being implemented in Inanda, kwaZulu-Natal. The project is funded by the Industrial Development Corporation as a Social Employment Fund (SEF) project.
