On April 18, the first group of tutors, students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, spent the morning with learners at Mariannridge Senior Secondary School.
The students help learners with maths tuition. Pupils are in Grades 8, 9, 10 and 11.
The tutors, known as The Legends, were welcomed by Rotarian, Professor Thomas Konrad, of UKZN, and Mr Patrick Thomas, the deputy principal.
This Rotary maths tuition project was started during the Covid lockdown. In 2025 the school achieved a 100 percent pass for mathematics and science of Grade 12 learners.
The school is the only "no fees" school in the Pinetown area to offer pupils free extra maths tuition.
Mr Thomas said this would not have been possible without the support of Rotary.
The Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana has raised funds for the project from corporate and private donors and through a now completed Rotary International Global Grant with the support of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos. Our club is deeply grateful for all the support this project has received.

Congratulations to the Matric Class at Mariannridge Senior Secondary School on their achievements.
Thanks to The Legends who volunteered to tutor learners in core Maths from Grades 8 to Grade 12. Your volunteer work made a difference.

Using their brains for a good cause! On Friday, September 19, a gathering of smart people competed in our club's first quiz evening fundraising event.
It was a great success and a fun evening.
The money raised will be used to fund the club's maths tutoring project at Mariannridge Senior Secondary School.
The venue was at Durban Light Infantry's headquarters. Huge thanks to all those who contributed to making the evening a wonderful success, by donating their time, offering prizes or other donations. The caterers did an outstanding job.
The night was not without drama. The questions had just started when the hall was plunged into darkness as a power outage hit the surrounding area. Cellphones came to in handy and the show went on. This is a quiz night people will remember.
Thank you to all that took part and supported the event.

We exchanged banners today with visting Rotarian KP Vasanthan from the Rotary Club of Pimpri ELITE in Pune, India.
KP shared with us the work his club is doing for the early detection of breast cancer in their area of Maharashtra.

In June our club delivered an overhead projector, donated by Lifeline, to a Mariannridge Senior Secondary School educator, Mr Dlamini.
Mr Dlamini teaches extra maths literacy at the school on Saturday mornings. He asked Rotarian Jan Thatiath, who was on a visit to the school, for an overhead projector to use during his lessons.
Jan, who works at Lifeline, was offered a Lifeline projector that was no longer being used. The projector was cleaned up, transparencies were found and these were collected from Lifeline by Rotarian Deon Delport.
The projector was delivered to the school on June 14 and received by the delighted educator.
The club sponsors a maths tutoring project at the school. Senior university students and graduates tutor learners (Grade 8 - 12) at the school on Saturday mornings. The project has seen a gratifying improvement in the exam results of learners who study "proper" maths.
