Unearthed started as a program aimed at giving young people a vision for their future. For finding news ways to use their skills and make the world a better place. Our initial pilot program (supported by the Kenchaan Foundation in the Netherlands) worked with (and still does support) a group of community based leaders who could build a better vision for their own future, for the future of their co

mmunities and the future of the protected game reserves around their communities. We've seen many business plans and complex financial forecasts over the years, we've seen people with brilliant minds fail and we have seen people with hardly anything succeed. Unearthed is very different from the normal "business training" programs out there. We don't focus on the technicalities as much as we focus on the vision. If you have a clear vision of who you are and what you want to do, you can make it happen.

The Unearthed Academy, along with our partners, Kenchaan Foundation and Wilderness Leadership School are on the hunt for participants from communities around the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve for our January 2023 training intake. Our community leaders program aims to uncover social entrepreneurs from rural communities around our important wilderness areas that have business ideas that can directly solve conservation challenges faced in Zululand's protected areas.

This time around, however, we have changed things up a bit in order to really unpack, understand and explore conservation challenges that impact the iMfolozi Game Reserve and communities living alongside the park. To do this, we are hosting a series of monthly community workshops focused on various environmental themes. What a blast hosting a group of bird guides from BirdLife South Africa on our social entrepreneurship course and Wilderness Trail with the Wilderness Leadership School - these guys do amazing work in their communities from environmental education to outdoor clubs and rural tourism development groups. The recurring theme of the two weeks ...... Impossible things broken down into nice bite-size chunks become very possible! We really look forward to watching their dreams become a reality over the coming years!

Don’t wait for the perfect job, spend the time seeking opportunities and figuring out how you can make a difference.

Our Conservation Careers program focuses on a range of what we call "brutal realities" .....the fact that things probably won’t go according to the “career plan” you have in your mind is a brutal reality. No matter how much you plan and how much you expect your career to go in a specific direction, it probably won’t.

A successful career, no matter what field it is in, will be about spotting opportunities and grabbing them. Doors open in the most unusual places, and the future of working and making an impact in the environmental sector has a lot of doors and opportunities in some rather unexpected places. You've got to be the innovator, watching for new trends, grabbing new opportunities and constantly seeking ways to make a positive difference.

It's worth repeating, don’t wait for the perfect, "ideal" job, spend the energy seeking opportunities and figuring out how you can make a difference. The rest will flow from that.

Our Story

Established in 2008, ETC-Africa are leaders in environmental consulting carbon management, tourism route development and developing young environmental leaders. Our global experience, project commitment and service speaks for itself.

We have partnered with the globally acclaimed Wilderness Leadership School to develop two new programs:

1) Careers In Conservation, a weekend or 6 day course which aims to give young school leavers, soon to be school leavers, graduates and gap year students insight into the world of conservation, instill valuable life skills and exposure to the many varied career opportunities in the environmental sector

2) Unearthed, is a one month social entrepreneurship training program that helps build confidence, leadership skills, life skills, social entrepreneurship skills and re-designing your future. The course involves a range of wilderness activities and a structured learning program specifically aimed at gap year students and young graduates interested in making the world a better place.
