KwaZulu-Natal Gay and Le***an Tourism Association
MEDIA RELEASE
Tuesday 8 April 2025
This year marks a remarkable milestone for the KwaZulu-Natal Gay and Le***an Tourism Association (KZNGALTA), as we celebrate 21 years of unwavering commitment to inclusivity, advocacy, and excellence in the tourism sector. Established in 2004, KZNGALTA has been a pioneering force in promoting KwaZulu-Natal as a welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, fostering economic empowerment and visibility for the community.
Over the past two decades, KZNGALTA has achieved numerous milestones that have shaped its legacy. From its early days of guiding the Tourism KZN pink strategy, launched at African Tourism Indaba with participation in several shows since, to becoming a proud Association Partner of World Travel Market - Africa and Equal Africa, the association has consistently championed LGBTQ+ representation in travel trade engagements and shows. Notably, KZNGALTA has participated in symposiums, online engagements, and global travel trade events, raising awareness about the value of LGBTQ+ tourism and its potential to drive economic growth.
This journey would not have been possible without the dedication of key individuals who have steered the association to success. Founding chairperson Jason Fiddler played a pivotal role in establishing KZNGALTA and advocating for genuine inclusivity in tourism marketing efforts. Past chairpersons David Walker and Shaun Kruger also made significant contributions, with Shaun Kruger leading strategic planning initiatives to align the association's goals with broader tourism development strategies.
We also honor the invaluable support of Nonhlanhla Mkhize from the Durban Le***an and Gay Centre, whose advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and community health has been instrumental in fostering a supportive environment. Allies such as Richard Moulton, Dominic Naidoo of Travel Bug Tours, and Tshukudu 'Rhino' Moepadira of Neostar Travel and Tours have been steadfast supporters, helping to amplify KZNGALTA's mission and reach. Their dedication to inclusivity and excellence has left an indelible mark on the association's journey.
As we reflect on 21 years of distinction, we also celebrate the partnerships and collaborations that have strengthened our mission. From local communities to international allies, KZNGALTA's network of supporters has been instrumental in driving positive change within the tourism industry.
Looking ahead, KZNGALTA remains committed to its purpose of bringing LGBTQ+-owned and -welcoming businesses together, offering visitors exceptional experiences while supporting economic growth. With a legacy of advocacy and collaboration, the association continues to pave the way for a more inclusive and vibrant tourism sector.
Here's to 21 years of distinction—and to many more years of making KwaZulu-Natal a beacon of inclusivity and pride!
