A tribute to Mr Dave Cohen – alumnus, teacher and coach
By Dr Stephen Leech (College Principal)
It is with sadness that we learnt of the recent passing of Mr Dave Cohen, known to many in the St Henry’s family as a classmate, a teacher and a coach.
Dave began his journey at St Henry’s in 1959, when he entered the then Std 1 (Grade 3). He completed matric in 1968 and thereafter proceeded to Durban Teachers’ Training College (‘Dokkies’) to complete a teaching diploma. Freshly qualified, Dave returned to St Henry’s in 1972 as a teacher. He taught across the Preparatory and High School in these years. He was made Head of Department (Administration) in 1982 and served in this capacity and as a teacher until 2004 when he left to pursue an interest as a sportswriter. The following year he returned to St Henry’s, serving briefly in the library before returning to the classroom until 2012 when he took early retirement from St Henry’s.
Dave’s foray into sportswriting made perfect sense as sport was a particular passion and many alumni would know him as a coach and manager for numerous age groups across sports such as rugby, cricket, golf and soccer.
We remember Dave as someone with a sense of humour and with many stories to share of his time as a student and member of staff at St Henry’s, a timespan of 53 years of loyal service. As we remember him, we send our condolences to his wife, Anthea and his son, Alistair (Class of 2008).
Rest in Peace, Mr Cohen,
