In South Africa, every 16 Days of Activism for Non-Violence Against Children and Women is a terrible reminder that 16 Days will never ever be enough. For our most vulnerable, our Children,
the 16 Days of Activism Must Be 365
Our country is guilty of the worst forms of abuse-violence of Children’s rights imaginable. These forms include psychological, physical, sexual and neglect. While statistics can never express the full, human, layered story; here are estimates on neglect, and sexual abuse:
There are [reportedly] 3.7 million orphans in South Africa, about half of whom have lost one or both their parents. About 150 000 of our
Children are believed to be living in Child-headed households. Reportedly, 800 000 of our Children are exposed to sexual abuse by the age of 17. Children are victims of at least 41% of all rapes. There are also certain forms of abuse which many don’t know is abuse; or consider normal because the system allows, assists, and often benefits from these abuses. These forms include alienating [separating] a Child from their family unjustly; withholding maintenance unjustly; and abuse in the form of our unequal, impractical and costly education system. In these forms of Child abuse and violence—incompetence, prejudice or corruption are more often than not closely involved. At the core of alienation and maintenance abuses are 2 main parties. A malicious parent, and a complicit family law system. While the malicious parent may not know about the impact of malicious parenting - or unnecessary legal battles aimed at punishing someone through the child/ren - the family law system [including certain police officers, social workers, psychologists and the legal fraternity] often does not care. Maybe this is because they are desensitised or numb to the impact of abuse trauma. IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. MZANSI, IT’S TIME TO STAND UP!
