🐾 What is World Animal Week?
World Animal Week runs from 3–9 October 2026, with World Animal Day on Sunday, 4 October at its centre. The week is used internationally to raise awareness about animal welfare, responsible care, protection of animals and the relationship between people, animals and the natural world. NRC
World Animal Day itself has a long history. The first celebration was organised by Heinrich Zimmermann in Berlin in 1925, attracting more than 5,000 people. The date was eventually established as 4 October, associated with St Francis of Assisi, traditionally regarded as the patron saint of animals and ecology. In 1931, animal-protection organisations meeting in Florence adopted 4 October as a universal World Animal Day. World Animal Day
🌍 What is the purpose?
The central idea is much bigger than simply saying "we love animals."
It is about asking:
How can we make the world a better and safer place for animals?
That includes:
- 🐶 Companion animals — dogs, cats and other pets
- 🐄 Farm animals
- 🦁 Wildlife
- 🐋 Marine animals
- 🐝 Insects and pollinators
- 🐦 Birds
- 🐾 Endangered species
- 🏡 Animals living alongside people
It also highlights issues such as cruelty, neglect, abandonment, exploitation, irresponsible breeding, wildlife protection, habitat loss and responsible pet ownership. World Animal Protection
👀 And there is a particularly lovely theme for 2026
The World Animal Day 2026 theme is:
“See the World Through Their Eyes” 🐾👀
That is a fantastic theme for an animal welfare organisation because it encourages people to stop thinking only about what we want from animals and instead consider what animals experience, feel and need. The official World Animal Day movement describes its purpose as raising the status of animals and improving welfare standards around the world. World Animal Day
🇿🇦 Why it is particularly relevant to South Africa
For an organisation such as SPCA Amanzimtoti, World Animal Week gives you an opportunity to connect domestic animal welfare with South Africa's extraordinary wildlife and biodiversity.
You could use the week to show that:
Every animal matters — from the puppy sleeping on someone's sofa to the elephant walking through an African reserve.
And importantly, World Animal Week doesn't have to be all sad stories. It can be a mixture of:
