On 13 June, the YMCA National Office, together with Soweto YMCA, the Seth Mazibuko Foundation, SAAPA, and our partners and stakeholders, gathered to commemorate the legacy of the youth of 1976 and to reflect on how young people today can continue to carry that legacy forward.

The days leading up to 16 June hold deep historical significance. In 1976, many young activists gathered at the YMCA Soweto (DOCC) to meet, organise, and prepare for what would become one of the most defining moments in South Africa’s history. The YMCA served as a place of planning, refuge, and community, and on 16 June it continued to be a safe space for young people during a time of uncertainty and struggle.

Today, that legacy lives on. As we gather to continue the journey of the Unfinished March, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and vision of the youth of 1976. We remember that their march was about more than a single day - it was a call for dignity, justice, opportunity, and a better future.

Today, we do not simply remember the youth of 1976, we commit ourselves to continuing their journey, carrying forward the torch they lit, and finishing the unfinished march.

A meaningful and insightful Symposium was successfully hosted by the KwaZulu Natal Christian Council (KZNCC), in partnership with the KwaZulu Natal Church Leaders’ Group (KZNCLG), under the theme: “An Update and Discussion on the Israel and Palestine Situation: Clarifying Theological and Historical Developments.”

Our AGNS Solomuzi Mubuza for delivered a thought-provoking keynote address and contributed valuable perspectives to this important conversation.

Yesterday marked another meaningful step forward as we continued presenting our way forward alongside the Youth Committee, General Secretaries, Executive Committee, National Office, and our valued elders.

Engaging across generations and leadership structures, we gained insights into what our next is as we transition from dialogue spaces back into our communities.

Day 3 of the National Dialogue:

We began the morning by building on the reflections from the previous evening, grounding ourselves with a thoughtful check-in as a movement. From there, we moved into focused working group sessions, where we took a deep and honest look at our “Sorriest Sorries” - confronting the areas where we’ve fallen short with openness and accountability.

The conversations then evolved into a forward-looking exercise, exploring what we will keep, what we need to let go of, and what we are ready to create together. It was a rich and energising session, marked by meaningful dialogue, clarity, and a shared sense of purpose.

Day 2: Dialogue, Reflection, and Realities

Day 2 of the dialogue began with an opening and reflection from our President, Philani Mabaso. He welcomed and introduced us to Nirina Rakotomalala who is the General Secretary of the Africa Alliance of YMCA’s and she shared valuable insights and expressed strong support for the South African YMCA Movement. She encouraged us to engage openly - inviting us to share, reflect, and begin reimagining solutions together.

The remainder of the morning was facilitated by Steve Hobbs, who guided a powerful session of sharing and reflection. We unpacked the harsh realities faced by young people in their daily lives. It was an incredibly in-depth exchange, with voices from diverse communities contributing to the conversation.

Key issues raised included the ongoing challenges of unemployment, mental health struggles, substance abuse, broken social structures, and the pressure of societal expectations among many others. The session created a space for everyone to speak openly and be heard, highlighting the depth and complexity of the challenges young people face.
