Restrictive Devices on Water Meters: A Short-Sighted Solution to eThekwini's Water Woes
Durban, 7 October 2024 - The eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement (ERPM) strongly condemns the municipality's decision to install restrictive devices on water meters as part of the water curtailment program. This drastic measure will have far-reaching consequences for residents, businesses, and the local economy. The City Manager, Mayor and CFO have ignored a request for an urgent meeting to discuss the concerns our community have raised, and we have chosen to take to the public domain to respond to the disingenuous eThekwini Urgent Press Release dated 4 October 2024. We call on this metro to acknowledge the real implications of restrictive devices on the community.
Technical Implications
Installing restrictive devices on water meters will:
1. Reduce water pressure, affecting household appliances and fire-fighting capabilities.
2. Increase the risk of burst pipes due to fluctuating pressure.
3. Cause damage to plumbing systems, leading to costly repairs.
Social and Economic Consequences
1. Inconvenience and hardship for households, particularly the elderly, disabled, and families with young children.
2. Negative impact on businesses, especially those reliant on water, such as restaurants, hospitals, and hotels.
3. Increased financial burden on ratepayers, who will be forced to bear the costs of repairs and maintenance.
Environmental Concerns
1. Potential for increased water waste due to leaky pipes and damaged infrastructure.
2. Harm to urban agriculture and gardening initiatives.
ERPM's Stance
"We reject the municipality's short-sighted approach to addressing water supply issues," said Asad Gaffar, ERPM Chairperson. "Instead of restricting ratepayers' access to water, the municipality must prioritize:
1. Fixing leaks and upgrading infrastructure.
2. Implementing efficient water management systems.
3. Promoting water conservation education and incentives."
Call to Action
ERPM demands the municipality:
1. Immediately halt the installation of restrictive devices.
2. Engage with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive water management plan.
3. Immediately install meters at non-revenue locations
4. Prioritise infrastructure repairs and upgrades.
