🚶♀️ KZN BLIND AND DEAF SOCIETY’S WHITE CANE RALLY BRINGS DURBAN CITY TO A STANDSTILL!!! 🦯
The streets of Durban came alive with a powerful message of awareness, inclusion and independence as the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society (KZNBDS) hosted its White Cane Rally today, 15 October 2026, in recognition of International White Cane Safety Day.
Approximately 120 Blind clients took to the streets, walking from the KZNBDS offices at 23 Ismail C. Meer Street, Durban Central, to the iconic Durban City Hall. Carrying their white canes with pride, the participants highlighted the importance of the white cane as an essential mobility tool that enables people who are blind or partially sighted to navigate their surroundings with greater confidence, safety and independence.
The rally served as a powerful reminder that the white cane represents far more than mobility — it symbolises dignity, freedom, accessibility and the right of every person to participate fully in society. It also called on motorists, pedestrians and the wider community to be more aware of white cane users and to help create safer, more accessible public spaces.
We were honoured to have eThekwini Councillor Vatiswa Ncukana join the walk in support of this important cause. Upon arrival at Durban City Hall, a presentation was held to further highlight the significance of White Cane Safety Day and the need to promote greater understanding of the challenges and achievements of people who are blind. Councillor Ncukana presented three Blind beneficiaries with white canes.
The event was proudly supported by the eThekwini Municipality Disability Desk with its Chairperson, Mr Lindokuhle Mkhize, also in attendance, demonstrating the importance of collaboration in advancing disability rights, accessibility and inclusion.
