On the 10th of October, we take a moment to recognize World Homelessness Day a reminder that homelessness is not just about a lack of shelter, but a complex social challenge that affects us all.

Behind every statistic is a person someone’s family, friend, or neighbor who has slipped through the cracks. Homelessness is a symptom of deeper issues like poverty, unemployment, trauma, and inequality.

In the spirit of Ubuntu “I am because we are” let’s remember that our strength as a community is measured by how we care for our most vulnerable. Together, we can create inclusive solutions that restore dignity and hope.

We also acknowledge and thank the many people, organizations, and volunteers who work every day on the ground and behind the scenes to support those in need. Your compassion and dedication truly make a difference.

We need to work together to ensure that everyone has a safe place to call home.

Over the past six months, our Programme Lead, Cassandra Abboy has been part of the PEX Fellowship, a 12-month leadership program in public engagement. Last week, they came together in Berlin for the inaugural Conference, hosted at the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and funded through the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. This special gathering of 22 fellows from Germany, South Africa, and Zimbabwe was a chance to connect across borders, share ideas, and explore how to better reach communities, raise awareness, and create impact. These insights will add real value to her work with City People eThekwini, as we continue to build inclusive solutions and deepen our community impact.
