We are honoured to welcome Bongiwe Nyoka, a young autistic author, who will read one of her books to us. 📖💛
Bongiwe and her mother will also share their inspiring journey — from Bongiwe’s diagnosis of autism, dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia, to becoming an accomplished young woman who has:
✨ Authored 10 children’s books, available on digital platforms including Amazon and Apple
✨ Developed skills as a graphic designer
✨ Become a web developer
✨ Designed her own clothing
Her story is a beautiful reminder that when we recognise strengths, provide opportunities and nurture potential, there are no limits to what Autistic persons can achieve. 🌟
Our ELIC learners will also be joining the celebration dressed as their favourite book characters, making this a colourful and joyful occasion for everyone! 🦸🏽‍♀️🧚🏽‍♂️📚👑
Come and share in this joyful and inspiring hour celebrating literacy, imagination, creativity and the power of possibility for Autistic persons. ❤️

The Shahumna Centre was honoured to participate in Golden Hours School’s Career Day 2026.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with learners, parents and fellow organisations while sharing more about our skills development programme and the pathways available to autistic young adults as they prepare for life beyond school.

A heartfelt thank you to Golden Hours School for inviting us to be part of this meaningful initiative, and to everyone who contributed to making the day a success.

We celebrated Spring with lots of smiles, dancing, painting flowers, and fun outdoor activities. Thank you to our amazing parents for dressing our little ones so brightly — they looked like a garden full of flowers!🌈🌻

🧁💙 What an exciting day for Blue Class! 💙🧁

Our little bakers had a wonderful Baker-Baker Day! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 From the morning, the children got hands-on experience baking delicious muffins, and later they proudly opened their very own shop to sell their tasty goodies! 🧁🛍️

A huge thank you to our amazing parents for their generous contributions and support in helping make Baker-Baker Day such a wonderful success. Your involvement makes these special learning experiences possible! 💙

We were delighted to host the Department of Agroecology, Umgeni Water and DSW for an informative practical workshop, focusing on environmental awareness and stewardship, this morning at the Shahumna Centre!

Students learned about recycling, good environmental practices and the correct methods of preparing soil, planting seedlings and watering.

The various presenters showcased their focus areas with enthusiasm and care - ensuring our students understood their content through visuals and practical activities.

We thank them for their informative workshop, planting a large quantity of seedlings and donating tools to our Agricultural Program at the Shahumna Centre!

Spell2communicate Workshop - an Opportunity for Non Speaking Autistics

We are pleased to share information about an upcoming workshop that is relevant to autistics, parents, caregivers and professionals. Breaks and support will be provided for Autistic teens and adults who need it. Due to the length of the programme, it is not advisable for younger children to attend.

This is an opportunity to learn, listen and connect with others on a similar journey.

Preparing for Big School 🎒✨

Big school is a big step — not only for our learners, but for their parents and families too.
Action in Autism hosted an informative and interactive workshop today for parents, focusing on helping families prepare for this important transition.

We were privileged to have wonderful presenters who shared practical strategies, resources and solutions:

🌟 Dineo Makegtloa from @ Interface – Improving AAC Communication
🌟 Amina Khan – Improving Sensory Regulation
🌟 Makhosi Philli – Visual Scheduling
🌟 Nombulelo Yeni from the Department of Education – Challenges & Resources

The workshop created an opportunity for parents to ask questions, share their experiences and explore practical ways to support their children as they take this next big step.

We know that transitions can bring both excitement and uncertainty, and we were so happy to support our families in preparing for the journey ahead.

🎶 Making Music, Making Connections! 🎶

Our ELIC learners at Action in Autism had a wonderful music session with Prince Makhoba, who joins us every Tuesday to share the joy of music with our children. 💙🎸

Music is so much more than fun and entertainment. For children, it can be a powerful tool for learning, communication and development. Through rhythm, movement and sound, music can help support listening skills, memory, concentration, coordination, turn-taking and self-expression. It also creates opportunities for children to build confidence, connect with others and discover new ways of communicating. 🌟

This week, our children didn't just listen — they got involved! 🎸 They had the opportunity to take turns playing the guitar, exploring sounds and experiencing the excitement of making music themselves.

A special thank you to Prince Makhoba for bringing his talent, energy and passion to our students every Tuesday. We love seeing the smiles, curiosity and confidence that these sessions bring! ❤️
