Our 2-Day Skills Transference Workshop is designed to take you beyond theory and give you practical knowledge and strategies you can use in the classroom, workplace, healthcare setting, home and community.

💙 Learn from lived experience and professional expertise, with autistic presenters, healthcare professionals, educators and a social worker sharing their knowledge.

This is an opportunity to ask questions, challenge assumptions, build your confidence and leave with practical skills you can actually use.

Join us for a practical Skills Transfer Workshop on Neurodiversity & Autism Acceptance — designed for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of neurodivergence and leave with practical strategies they can use in everyday settings.

This workshop is about more than understanding autism. It’s about seeing the whole person, recognising different ways of communicating, learning and creating environments where neurodivergent individuals can feel safe, respected, valued and included.

🌿 A Lighter Me – Ending the Term with Our Staff in Mind 🌿

As we come to the end of another busy term at Action in Autism, we took some time to pause, breathe and focus on something equally important to the work we do — our staff. ❤️

Today’s staff development session, “A Lighter Me,” focused on coping with stress and exploring how our attitudes and behaviours can help us navigate the many pressures we face, both at work and in our personal lives.

The session was anything but ordinary! Our presenter Dr Reshma Sathiparsad created a fun, interactive and engaging space where staff could learn, reflect and simply enjoy being together. Through singing, drumming, movement and laughter, our team was reminded of the importance of taking care of ourselves, finding healthy ways to manage stress and making space for joy.

There was plenty of participation, lots of smiles and, most importantly, an opportunity for our staff to recharge and reconnect. 🥁🎶😊

At Action in Autism, we believe that supporting our staff is an important part of creating a positive environment for the autistic children and adults we serve.

As we close off the term, we thank our incredible team for their dedication, compassion and commitment. You give so much of yourselves every day — today was about giving something back to you. 💙

What an incredible three days it has been!
We were privileged to welcome a group of grade 10 learners and their coach Chad Desplace, from Westville Boys High School who volunteered their time and energy to make a meaningful difference at Action in Autism.
Over three days, they rolled up their sleeves and got involved in so many ways. They:
🎨 Donated 40 litres of paint
🖌️ Painted and refreshed our calm rooms
🧼 Cleaned walls in the classrooms
📦 Reset our storeroom
📚 Reorganised our library
These actions help us create a calm, organised and welcoming environment makes a real difference to the children, young people and adults who use our Centre every day.

The three days were about more than giving. They were also about learning, understanding and connecting.
As part of the visit, we had the opportunity to provide an Autism Awareness presentation to the learners. One of our autistic students Anthony Eastwood shared part of his own story, and his words captured so beautifully what we hope every person who meets an autistic person will understand:
“I am autistic. This is one part of who I am. It is not the only thing that makes me who I am, but it does affect the way I experience the world.”
He went on to explain what it can feel like when sounds, lights and other sensory experiences become overwhelming, and then shared an important message about the future he hopes for:
“Being autistic does not mean I cannot contribute something valuable. I may just need to do some things differently.”
And perhaps his most powerful message was this:
“Different does not mean less. Treat us like a person, talk to us, include us and be patient. If we are good at something, recognise it as a strength.”
He ended with three simple messages we can all carry with us:
Autism is a different way of experiencing the world.
Being autistic does not mean you cannot achieve things.
Give people a chance before deciding what they can or cannot do.

We are deeply grateful to Westville Boys High School for choosing to spend three days with us, not only improving our physical spaces, but also taking the time to learn about autism and listen to the lived experience of an autistic young person.
Thank you for showing our AiA community that volunteering is not simply about what you give — it is also about the connections, understanding and possibilities that we create together. 💙

We are thrilled to share that our learners and students enjoyed a first sensory-friendly cinema experience at The Pavilion Shopping Mall today!

A huge thank you to The Pavilion Shopping Centre Management Company, Pareto Group, for generously sponsoring the entire cinema experience, including snacks, and making this special outing possible for our people and accompanying family members.

Our sincere appreciation also goes to Nu Metro for providing thoughtful reasonable accommodations, including low lights, reduced sound and bass, freedom of movement, and wonderful staff who were so accepting, engaging and interactive with our learners and students.

Everyone had an absolutely wonderful time watching Minions & Monsters, with highly positive feedback from our learners, students and families.

A special thank you to Avesh Udiajoo, Pavilion Marketing Coordinator, for facilitating this generous sponsorship.

We are truly grateful and thrilled that this opportunity allowed our little ones and young adults to experience the joy of a cinema outing in an inclusive and supportive environment. Here’s to many more opportunities for inclusion, participation and creating wonderful memories together.

Saturday, 12 September 2026 was a wonderful day at Action in Autism. We hosted our free diagnostic clinic with Paediatric Neurologist, Dr. Anele Mkhize, an incredible specialist who gives her love and time to our people. We are so humbled by her support to the Autism community.
At the same time we hosted in partnership with Avishana Sewrajan a spell to communicate workshop (S2C) from 8am - 12noon. It was a packed out event. We were enthralled by Akha Khumalo, a non speaking autistic who used the S2C methodology to type out his profound, wise and witty responses to questions the audience asked. We are deeply thankful to Tracy Gunn and Avishana Sewrajan for providing the science and background to this method and for demonstrating how liberating it is for our nonspeaking population.
