Welcoming friends to ReStory

It was wonderful to have Sohana Bridgemohan from Hatch Engineering visit us this week. Hatch have partnered with us for a few years, investing in the lives of young adults, through supporting our Phakama programme, and some of our tertiary bursaries. We are so grateful for what this enables.

It was a lovely visit, and Sohana was very excited to see our new office space and our training centre project beginning.

Thank you Northwood School for having us. We so enjoyed our time with the Grade 8 and 9 boys.

Today, on Youth Day, we remember the courage of the young people who stood up 50 years ago during the Soweto Uprising. Their bravery ignited a movement that reshaped our nation, sparked mass resistance to apartheid, and galvanised global condemnation of an unjust system.

Yet as we mark this milestone, we are confronted by an uncomfortable reality.

Our youth face a different crisis.

Not pass laws or segregated classrooms, but unemployment, exclusion, and the growing risk of being shut out of meaningful economic participation. Too many young South Africans are filled with potential, yet find doors closed, opportunities scarce, and hope tested daily.

One can only imagine how those who were young in 1976 must feel when they look at this reality. After all they sacrificed, after all they fought for, surely this cannot be the future they envisioned.

This year's Youth Day theme, "RESET@50 – The Future Calls", challenges us to respond differently.

It calls us to shift our gaze from the problems to the possibilities.

To look for every small opportunity, every spark of innovation, every act of mentorship, every new job created, every young entrepreneur supported, every skill developed, every dream encouraged. These may seem like tiny glimmering lights, but together they illuminate a path forward.

The future is not something that happens to us. It is something we build.

We cannot give up. We must stand up.

Now more than ever, each of us has a role to play in creating opportunities, opening doors, sharing knowledge, investing in potential, and believing in the next generation.

For our youth.

For our future.

And in whatever way God has given us the ability to serve, let us answer the call.

Humans of Bhambayi

“Do you still work at ReStory Foundation?”
When Sinamandla was asked this recently, he was puzzled. The answer came quickly:
“I never see you in any of the photos!”
The irony is that Sina is the reason so many of those photos exist.
An artist at heart, he sees the world differently. Every face holds a story. Every interaction carries meaning. Every conversation is filled with possibility. Through his lens, he captures these moments with honesty, care, and remarkable skill.
Photography is only one of his gifts. Whether he is doodling in the margins, sketching a portrait, or creating something entirely new, Sina is constantly making art. Creativity seems to flow naturally from him.
So why is he never in the photos?
Because he is usually behind the camera, preserving the stories of everyone else.
Today, we turn the lens around and celebrate the storyteller himself. ReStory Foundation - and the Bhambayi community - are richer because of the way Sinamandla sees the world.

This past week has seen Mandy in Rome, invited by a collaboration between World Vision, Harvard and other universities, to share at the conference: Fostering Hope for Children, Global Summit 2026 being held in the Vatican City.
We are so excited to be included with thought leaders, as together we explore how to grow tangible hope in vulnerable children.

Child Protection Week is a time to shine a light on the challenges facing vulnerable children, and all children - and the collective responsibility we all share to protect them.
And whilst child protection week shines a light for 7 days, we know that child protection needs to be prioritised every day of the year. Not only by authorities, but by every single adult in society.
Because protecting children is everyone’s business.

For a child waiting for safety and justice, every day matters.
Delays in decisions, services, and support can leave children vulnerable when they need protection most.
Each day they wait, is a roadblock to their healing and recovery. Delays in child justice can prolong their trauma.
Child protection cannot wait.

This Child Protection Week, let’s work towards faster, stronger, child-centred responses that put children’s wellbeing first. Let us as adults not settle for delays and postponements. Let us show children that they matter and deserve being prioritised. That they are worth fighting for.
