UBH Pays Tribute to Mr Zweni 🕊️

On the 28th of April 2026, we gathered at a major church in Durban to honour the life of our beloved Chairperson, Mr Zweni. The memorial service was deeply moving and well attended, bringing together leaders, comrades, and community members whose lives he touched.
We were honoured to hear heartfelt tributes from respected voices including Mr Thusi, Desmond D'Sa, Mrs Kira Erwin, Sbu Zikode, Mr Lucky Gabela, Mr Sbusiso Hluthwa, Miss Mantombela, and many others. Each speaker reflected on Mr Zweni’s unwavering commitment, his powerful contributions in stakeholder engagements, and the impact he made across communities.
His passing is a profound loss—not only to Ubunye Bama Hostela (UBH), but to all who worked alongside him. He was more than a leader; he was a pillar of strength, a voice for the people, and a guiding force. His absence will be deeply felt, and his role cannot be replaced.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us to mourn, support, and stand in solidarity with UBH and the Zweni family during this difficult time.

💔Ngokudabuka okukhulu, Ubunye bamaHostela bumemezela ukudlula emhlabeni kukasihlalo wethu, uMnu Vusani Zweni.

UMnu Zweni udlule emhlabeni ngoLwesithathu kulandela ukubhekwa kancane emzimbeni kuthathwa okuthile kuyobhekwa. Nakuba ukubhekwa kwakhe kuphumelele futhi ubese esededelwe esibhedlela, okuthusayo lapho ethi uzama ukuthatha izitephu ezimbalwa uyaye wawa wase esishiya.. Lokhu kushona okungazelelwe kushiye umndeni wakhe kanye nabo bonke abasebenze naye beshaqekile kakhulu.

NgeSonto eledlule nje, besihlangene noMnu Zweni emhlanganweni wabaholi owawubanjelwe eThokoza Women’s Hostel, lapho ayesempilweni enhle futhi enomdlandla. Ukudlula kwakhe ngokungazelelwe kunzima ukukukholwa.

UMnu Zweni ubengumholi ohloniphekile, ozinikele, osebenzele inhlangano yethu ngobuqotho, eqinisekisa ukuthi abantu esibamele baphathwa ngesithunzi nangenhlonipho efanele. Ubephinde abe yingxenye ebalulekile yabantu abaphezulu abahlanu kwi-Durban Coalition, lapho abambe iqhaza elikhulu ekuqhamukeni namasu okulethela ushintsho oluhle kumasipala.

Labo abasebenze naye bakhuluma ngobuhlungu obukhulu bokulahlekelwa umholi ovelele owayehlale eletha ukuthula, ubumbano, nobuhlakani ngisho nasezingxoxweni ezinzima kakhulu.

Ngaphandle kobuholi bakhe enhlanganweni, uMnu Zweni ubengumnikazi wamatekisi ohloniphekile futhi engumuntu obalulekile enhlanganweni yamatekisi, owaziwa ngokuletha izixazululo nokuqondisa.

Sidlulisa amazwi enduduzo asuka enhliziyweni emndenini wakhe, ozakwabo, nakubo bonke ababemazi kulesi sikhathi esinzima.

Imininingwane eyengeziwe mayelana nomngcwabo kanye nenkonzo yesikhumbuzo izokwaziswa maduze.

It is with deep sorrow that Ubunye bamaHostela announces the passing of our chairperson, Mr Vusani Zweni.

Mr Zweni passed away on Wednesday following a minor operation. Although the procedure was successful and he had been discharged, he sadly collapsed shortly afterward and passed on. This tragic loss has come as a great shock to both his family and all who worked closely with him.

Just this past Sunday, we were together with Mr Zweni at an office bearers’ meeting held at Thokoza Women’s Hostel, where he was in good health and high spirits. His sudden passing is difficult to comprehend.

Mr Zweni was a respected and dedicated leader who served our organisation with integrity, always ensuring that the people we represent were treated with dignity and respect. He also played a key role as one of the top five members of the Durban Coalition, where he contributed meaningfully to strategies aimed at driving positive change within the Municipality.

Those who worked alongside him speak of the deep pain of losing a remarkable leader one who consistently brought calm, unity, and wisdom to even the most challenging discussions.

Beyond his leadership in the organisation, Mr Zweni was also a respected taxi owner and an influential figure within the association, known for his ability to provide solutions and guidance.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who knew him during this difficult time.

Today members of the Kosi Bay Displaced Communities Committee (KBDCC) marched in eManguzi, northern KwaZulu-Natal. The march is an important moment for the communities as they continue to call for justice, dignity, and recognition.

KBDCC represents communities in northern KwaZulu-Natal that were displaced and dispossessed of their ancestral lands, forests and waters in 1989 when the Kosi Bay area was declared a nature reserve. KBDCC works to defend customary rights to land, forests and fisheries in protected areas, including rights to use these resources sustainably, and to meaningfully participate in the governance and management of these resources for the benefit of current and future generations.

KBDCC handed over a memorandum of demands to the CEO of Isimangaliso Wetland Park. Their demands include wanting urgent attention to their land claim filed in 1995, and a way forward that will benefit the broader community and not just the few who benefit from the establishment of protected areas.
