From a waitress to a Commercial Pilot.

Meet - Precious Sibalo, she worked as a waitress and a flight attendant, before obtaining her qualification as a Commercial Pilot.

She was raised by her grandparents after her mother passed away. At age 17, she had a child and relocated from Zimbabwe to South Africa where she worked as a waitress, but all this could not stop her from achieving her dreams.

Precious later moved to Dubai where she also a waitress, while in Dubai she applied for a cabin crew job at Qatar Airways. Among her six friends who applied for the job, she was the only one recruited and joined Qatar Airways. She worked for five years at Qatar Airways while she was saving money to train and become a Pilot which was her childhood dream.

In 2017, she enrolled at 43 Airschool South Africa for her Integrated Airline Transport Pilot License (IATPL) course and obtained a Commercial Pilot License on 24 November 2020.

Today, Precious Sibalo is a certified Commercial Pilot, Philanthropist and Motivational Speaker.

She is an Advisory Board Member at Women Power Africa and Founder of Precious Wings Foundation which aims at aiding and empowering marginalized children.

She is currently working on her Flight Instructors Rating and flying to build hours in an effort to achieve her next goal - flying big planes for Qatar Airways.

"People should never give up on their dreams. I used the job of a waitress as a stepping stone. Some people will always say ‘I will never take this job’. No, take it and use it as a stepping stone. The same waitress job, took me to Dubai and paved the way for my job at Qatar Airways," said Precious Sibalo.

From losing her parents at an early age to a trailblazing Actress.

Meet – Thuso Mbedu, South African born remarkable Actress, in 2022 she featured on the historical epic film ‘The Woman King’ in the role of Nawi alongside Viola Davis.

In 2021, she starred in the Amazon Video limited series The Underground Railroad making her the first South African actress to lead an American television series.

Thuso was born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal to a Zulu mother and a Xhosa/Sotho father. She was raised in the Pelham area by her Zulu grandmother, who became her legal guardian after the passing of both her parents at an early age.

She attended Pelham Primary School and then Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.

In 2012, she took a course with the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City.

In 2013, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours in Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).

In 2014, Thuso had a small role in the second season of the Mzansi Magic soapie Isibaya, before landing her role as Kitso on the Etv soapie – Scandal. She then had a guest role as Kheti on the second season of the SABC 2 teen drama series Snake Park.

After being unemployed for six months, Thuso landed her first starring role as Winnie in the Mzansi Magic teen drama series Is’Thunzi, which premiered in October 2016.

In September 2017 she was nominated for an International Emmy Award in the category Best Performance by an Actress for her role in Is’Thunzi and was the only African to be nominated that year.

In 2018, she won the South African Film and Television Award in the category Best Actress Drama for her role in Is’Thunzi.

In 2021, Thuso won two awards at the Gotham Awards for her leading role in the Amazon Video limited series – The Underground Railroad.

In 2022, she won the Best Female Performance in a New Scripted Series at the Independent Spirit Awards for her role in The Underground Railroad.

In April 2023, she was named the new face of Christian Dior’s Gris Dior fragrance.

In May 2023, Thuso become first L’Oréal Paris brand ambassador and spokesperson in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Growing up, one never saw oneself as beautiful – I could never have imagined that one day I would have the honour of being L’Oréal Paris’ first Sub-Saharan African spokesperson. A brand that stands for women empowerment, with a strong sense of diversity, sisterhood, and feminism.”

From a village girl to a trailblazing Attorney.

Meet - Alungile Madolo, 26-year-old Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa and Director at Alungile Madolo Incorporated.

She was born and raised in Coza village in Libode, Eastern Cape.

In 2019, she obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Walter Sisulu University and did her practical legal training at the Law School in East London.

In 2020, she served as a Candidate Attorney at AS Zono and Associates.

In 2021, she was officially admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

Instead of waiting to find a job, Alungile decided to open her own legal firm, Alungile Madolo Incorporated in Mthatha.

She offers following services: Civil Law, Criminal, Family Law, Debt Collection etc...

"Opening my own legal firm at the age of 25 was the best decision I have ever made. As an Attorney, I have learnt that one must just be patient. Especially financially! I have learnt that the route I chose needs commitment. One must just take a short break from the world and focus a lot more on building their names in this career," said Attorney Alungile Madolo.

From a Flight Attendant to a Commercial Pilot.

Meet - Aya Gertrude Konan, Ivory Coast's first female Commercial Pilot trained by the Ivorian State. She is currently a First Officer at Air Côte D'Ivoire, flying the Airbus A320.

She began her career in the aviation industry as an Air Hostess in April 2013, a position she held until October 2015.

In the last quarter of 2014, the national airline company Air Côte D'Ivoire launched a competition with the aim of recruiting and training young Ivorians in aeronautical professions (pilots and aircraft mechanics).

Aya seized the opportunity and applied for it. At the end of the recruitment process, 15 people were selected out of approximately 1500 candidates and Aya Gertrude Konan was the only woman among them.

At the end of a 2 year and 4 months training, (from October 2015 to February 2017) she became the first female Commercial Pilot trained by the State of Côte D'Ivoire.

Meet - Dr Claire Karekezi, Rwanda's first female Neurosurgeon. She obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Rwanda.

She completed her neurosurgical training at Mohamed V University of Rabat (Morocco), World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Training Center for Africa and graduated in 2016.

She further enrolled in several neurosurgical fellowships with a special interest in Neuro-Oncology and Skull Base Surgery at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts, USA.

She later completed a Clinical Fellowship in Neuro-Oncology & Skull Base Surgery at the University of Toronto, Toronto Western Hospital in Canada before returning to Rwanda in August 2018 to become the country’s first female Neurosurgeon.

Dr Claire Karekezi is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Rwanda Military Hospital and a Senior Lecturer of Surgery at the University of Rwanda, School of Medicine and Pharmacy.

She serves as the Chair of the African Women in Neurosurgery (AWIN), an Executive Board Member at Society for Neuro-Oncology Subsaharan Africa (SNOSSA), a Secretary of Rwanda Medical and Dental Council (RMDC) and is a member of multiple national and international neurosurgical societies.

"As a young ambitious woman, I believe you need to stick to your ambition. There is nothing impossible, you can dream big. I dreamt big, I didn't really realize that I can become a Neurosurgeon at some point but I had people who believed in me and who saw the light in me and they guided me. So that's the importance of having parents, teachers and mentors, but also of being perseverance and keeping the dedication to what you want to become," said Dr Claire Karekezi.

From a small village girl to a remarkable Pilot.

Meet - Captain Kgomotso Phatsima, one of the first female Military Pilots in the Botswana Defence Force.

She is the Founder and President of Dare to Dream, a social enterprise dedicated to the advancement of young women and girls in STEM Aviation and Aerospace as well as Entrepreneurship development skills.

She holds a Commercial Pilot Licence from Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana, a Basic Military Flying from the Flying Training School (Botswana Defence Force), a Master of Science (MSc) in Strategic Management from the University of Derby and a Bachelor of Education Science in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Botswana.

Captain Phatsima grew up from very humble beginnings in a small village called Ledumadumane, which is a just a stone throw from Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. She used to walk barefoot to school and see aeroplanes passing over her mother's house and from an early young age she knew she was born to fly!

Armed with a Bachelor of Education Science in Mathematics and Physics, she joined the Botswana Defence Force in 2009, for a year long basic military training and never looked back.

"When I was growing up in the village I never had the opportunity to sit down with a pilot nor see the inside of a flying machine until I had the opportunity to fly it, after qualifying as one of the first female Military Pilots in Botswana Defence Force l started Dare To Dream to inspire the next generation more especially girls and those who grew up in the village like me and give them a chance I never had, We use the POWER OF FLIGHT to ignite dreams, to celebrate passion and give the upcoming generation a sense of purpose in their education," said Captain Kgomotso Phatsima.

From a domestic worker to a Medical Doctor.

Meet - Dr Pamela Phumzile Sithole, she worked part-time as a domestic worker while studying Medicine full-time at the University of Kwazulu-Natal.

She started working as a domestic helper at the age of 14, despite all the challenges and hardships, her perseverance and determination helped turn her life around and at age 24, she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

“Growing up there were a lot of challenges, including our financial circumstances and my parents’ divorce. My mother was left to provide for us and she was unemployed for the longest time. As a result, we had no choice but to rely on my siblings to put me through school from an early age up until high school which put a lot of financial strain on them."

"Despite these challenges, I was determined to live up to my potential and applied myself diligently to my studies."

"Against all odds, I was able to juggle my studies with part-time work over the years having the ability to rise above my circumstances."

“Even though I was a domestic worker, I didn’t shelve my dreams and think that it’s over for me. I continued to work hard and I’m glad that I did, for me it really was just a lesson in humility and it has enabled me to better understand people from different walks of life and be able to relate to each person. I always knew that good things lay ahead for me and it was truly just a matter of time."

"My hard work and commitment to my studies paid off when I received funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. This helping hand was to prove life changing."

“Never despise humble beginnings but equally, don't let them define where you will be in five or 10 years’ time, with God everything is possible," said Dr Pamela Phumzile Sithole.

From a poor village girl to a CNN Hero of the Year.

Meet - Nelly Cheboi, a remarkable CNN Hero of the Year 2022, she quit her software engineering job in the US to create tech labs for underprivileged rural school kids in Africa.

She is the Founder and CEO of TechLit Africa, an organization that builds computer labs in rural classrooms using recycled computers and currently serves 10 schools in Kenya.

Nelly Cheboi grew up in poverty in rural Kenya, where she often went hungry and missed school because her single mother could not afford tuition.

Cheboi ultimately received a college scholarship in America, worked odd jobs to support her family, and discovered her passion for computer science.

In 2016, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Augustana College, and secured a software engineering job with a number of American companies before quitting to create tech labs for underprivileged rural school kids in Africa.

Since 2018, Cheboi has given over 4,000 kids the opportunity to learn a variety of computer programs and gain technical skills that will position them for family-sustaining jobs and brighter futures.

In December 2022, she was crowned CNN Hero of the Year.

"This is a win for all African mothers. I want to get to 100 schools which translates to 40,000 school-going children. We need to rewrite what it means to grow up in rural Africa because people can work glamorous jobs and still work in your community," said Nelly Cheboi.

From being born into poverty to becoming a Chartered Accountant at age 23.

Meet - Maud Chifamba, at age 14 she was accepted to study Accountancy at the University of Zimbabwe, becoming the youngest University student in Africa.

At age 18, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSc Honours) and a Master of Science (MSc) in Accountancy at age 20 from the University of Zimbabwe.

Maud lost her father when she was just 5 years old. Her mother was suffering from cancer and she could not take care of her and her younger brother. They fell under the care of their step-brother, in 2003.

In 2005, when she was in grade 3, during the mid-year exams, she was mistakenly given a grade 4 exam paper, on which she scored 100%. The same year, she requested a grade 5 test paper and passed with distinction. She went on to finish grade 7 at the age of 9.

In 2009, Maud did not have money for high school, she studied on her own and completed her Ordinary Level in just two years.

She was later identified by the Ministry of Education and awarded financial assistance for her Advanced Level and she scored 12 points in 2011. She lost her mother the same year.

At age 23, Maud Chifamba qualified as a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe and certified as a Public Accountant by the Public Accountants and Auditors Board Zimbabwe.

She is currently an MBA in Finance candidate at The Wharton School, USA.

She previously served as an Audit Senior In Charge at Deloitte, Audit Senior In Charge at SAPRO, Internal Audit Intern at Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), Lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe, Guest Lecturer at Chartered Accountants Academy (CAA), and Chairperson of the Board at Zimbabwe Youth Council.

From a teenage mother to a Medical Doctor.

Meet - Dr. Thandeka Ngcobo, at age 17 she fall pregnant, instead of being defeated by a teenage pregnancy, she worked very hard to become a remarkable Medical Doctor.

She hails from a small village in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. She and her seven siblings were raised by a single mother and later became a teenage mother herself.

Against all odds, she completed her grade 12 from Umlazi Comprehensive Technical High School, at the age of 17, being one of the top 10 matriculants in Ethekwini region.

She immediately got accepted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine – UKZN ) where she obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), becoming the second graduate in her family.

"My late mother is my heroine. She could have told me to stay home and raise my daughter, but instead she gave me the chance to thrive. And thrive I did," she said.

Dr. Thandeka Ngcobo is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner and currently practices as a Medical Officer.

She believes that proper primary health care services are a vital tool to fight the burden of diseases and illnesses in the health sector. She’s also developed an interest in rural medicine.

Dr. Thandeka Ngcobo is now happily married and a mother of two.

Having been a teenage mother herself she remains vocal about issues of teenage pregnancy. She is also passionate about community development and youth and women empowerment. Her late mother, remains her heroine, who gave her a second chance beyond teenage pregnancy.
