As South Africa marks , we pause to remember the importance of dignity, equality, and freedom for all people. This year’s theme ‘Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real’ focuses on the 30th anniversary of the Constitution, emphasising the promotion of human dignity, justice, and equality, in daily life.
Last weekend we joined in solidarity with our brother and sister Scouts across the African Continent, to recognise and celebrate the positive impact of Scouting in communities and countries, through Africa Scout Day. Today, we reflect closer to home. This day reminds us of the bravery of those who stood up for justice, and it challenges each of us to continue building a country where everyone is respected and valued.
As Scouts, you already live these principles through your Promise and Law. Every time you help someone in need, treat others with kindness, or stand up for what is right, you honour the spirit of this day. Human Rights Day reminds us that every person matters, every voice deserves to be heard, and that every act of kindness strengthens our nation.
For with freedom comes great responsibility. The responsibility to make choices that count for good, balancing your personal freedoms with the rights of others. The responsibility to live according to Scouting values means respecting every individual, fighting against discrimination, and acting with kindness, honesty, and integrity. The responsibility to ensure that Scouting is a welcoming space for everyone, free from prejudice, where every person is valued and respected.
As Scouts, we are called upon to be an example, choosing to live by strong values which shape our character, actions and our communities. Act with responsibility, be inclusive, and help build a better world. Together, we can help make South Africa a place where everyone can thrive.
Yours in Scouting, Chief Commissioner Gary Pienaar
