Assassination Attempt on Comrade Maphiwe Gasela by Abahlali BaseMjondolo Group

On Wednesday, our comrade Maphiwe Gasela was attacked and shot at by a known individual named Siyabonga Mngadi, who is associated with Abahlali BaseMjondolo and had fled Khenana after the killing of Ayanda Ngila.

At about 7 p.m., while coming from a shop, Maphiwe was followed by a person who had disguised himself by covering his face. He tracked her inside Khenana. Intending to see who this person was, Maphiwe stopped. The person then pulled out a gun. Unfortunately for him, as he tried to shoot, the gun jammed and wouldn't fire.

In an attempt to fight for her life, Maphiwe jumped on him while he was still trying to c**k the gun again. She grabbed him and fought him. It was at that moment that the gun went off, and Maphiwe was shot. As they were fighting, the killer got up and started running away after the shooting. Luckily, the cloth he had used to cover his face fell off during the fight, and Maphiwe saw that it was Siyabonga Mngadi. When she screamed, "Ungdubulelani Siyabonga?" the killer ran away. Maphiwe is currently undergoing surgery at the hospital.

Siyabonga Mngadi is part of the group that killed comrade Lindokuhle, Ayanda Ngila, and Nokuthula and then ran away. They were brought back to Khenana by the Abahlali BaseMjondolo President as they have been terrorizing us, trying to take over Khenana from us. This is what he's been looking for: bloodshed, because without people being killed, nothing keeps them relevant. There is no victimhood and sympathy to rally on. Sebayasbulala again.

After failing to keep Landu, Miya, and Langa in jail on trumped-up charges, and finally losing the case a few weeks back after they were found innocent, they have now resorted to killing us.

KHENANA COMMUNE CONTINUES TO FACE ATTACKS AND INTIMIDATION BY THE ABAHLALI BASEMJOLOLO MOB GROUP

Yesterday, our women comrades were harassed and intimidated by a mob of individuals associated with Abahlali baseMjondolo, a group that has hijacked Khenana, during a peaceful community gathering held at Khenana.

Prior to this incident, the same group had turned away comrades and journalists who had come to engage with us about the ongoing conditions facing our community and struggle. This mob acts as an eagle eye for Sbu Zikode and his movement, spying on everything that Khenana does. They refused the comrades entry into Khenana, claiming that they first needed permission from Sbu Zikode.

Khenana does not belong to Abahlali baseMjondolo or Sbu Zikode. We do not need permission from anyone for people to visit Khenana or show solidarity with our struggle. We are told that Zikode claims to have nothing to do with these actions, yet we know very well that all of this is being carried out in his name and interests.

Later in the day, during a community meeting organised by women comrades, a group of close to seven men arrived and aggressively disrupted the gathering. The group intimidated them and deliberately interrupted the meeting. Our women comrades were subjected to hostility and intimidation.

We reaffirm our constitutional and political right to meet, organise, and discuss matters affecting our struggle without fear of threats, disruption, or coercion from any structure or individuals associated with Abahlali baseMjondolo.

Attempts to erase, distort, and destroy the history and struggle of Khenana will never deter us. We know what we stand for. They can continue jailing us, attacking us, and even killing us, but they will never destroy the principles and struggle that the Khenana of Lindokuhle Mnguni, Ayanda Ngila and Nokuthula Mabasa represents.

Revolutionary greetings to you all comrades!

we would like to appreciate all of you who has been in solidarity with us, and our comrades who were arrested on the 30th of June 2024. Who are Siniko Miya , Langa Mbunguzane and Landu Tshazi.

So Today was the judgement day of the case they were arrested for . They were charged of 4 different charges it was Assault(GBH), common assault, Damage of property x2, well the magistrate has found our comrades not guilty in all the charges they were facing.

Remember all these charges laid against our comrades were opened by the same people who has been attacking our members and our ideology as Khenana commune. Are the same people who were complainants in all the cases we've been facing since 2021, who are still remaining in good standing as members of ABAHLALI BASEMJONDOLO.

To Our Friends and Comrades in Solidarity with the Khenana Commune

We write this message to help clarify the confusion, and to provide context to recent developments that have left many comrades with questions. Let us be clear: Khenana Commune is not fighting anyone.

We are defending ourselves against malicious lies being told about us, lies meant to make us appear bitter or dangerous.

Asilwi namuntu. As stated in our previous post, what is being presented as a relaunch of Khenana is, in fact, the creation of a rival branch, designed to sow division, hostility, and potentially enable further violence even killings against comrades here in Khenana.

The video below gives clear context. It was taken last year at one of the movement’s General Assembly meetings. It was in that moment that we first heard publicly that we had been expelled from the movement. We had never declared our departure, never submitted any written withdrawal, and had never been formally notified of any disciplinary process or expulsion. The aim was to turn the entire membership against us, paint us as bad people. The aim was to turn members against us and paint Khenana as full of criminals.

Isukaphi lenkinga?, We simply said we cannot talk about relaunching until the issues we raised with the leadership are resolved. We requested many meetings through the office of the Secretary General, most were ignored. The few meetings that did happen were not meetings, but it was to shame, silence, and humiliate us. We were told we were ungrateful, that we sidakwe umbuso, as the video itself shows. We were never given a chance to respond or share our grievances. We have recordings and evidence of these engagements.

Today, we are labelled izigebengu, and our comrades Lindokuhle, Ayanda, and Mabaso are being called criminals by the very people who once claimed to honour them.

Most painfully, we were pressured to turn against our own comrades, Landu, Maphiwe, Sindiswa, and Sniko who were in safe houses due to threats and danger. Their only crime was disagreeing with the things that we being done to us. When we refused to betray them, the support was taken away, stopped paying for their rent, and even cut legal assistance, using cases to blackmail and isolate them. Our refusal to throw them under the bus became the reason for endless efforts to discredit, exclude, and criminalise them. We have records and proof of these actions.

Khenana is a conscious and disciplined community. We believe in dignity, mutual respect, and true democracy, not authoritarianism disguised as leadership. We remained silent for a long time. But when our struggle is under attack, we will defend it. We did not want to reach this point of public confrontation. But when lies are sold to the public, we are compelled to speak the truth. We do not speak because we enjoy it. Asixabene thina namuntu thina. We are in conflict with the absence of justice and truth.

We will never be forced to reconcile with those who have killed us, spilled blood, and now try to profit from our pain.

We will never allow our loss, our struggle, and our sacrifices to be used to build careers of victimhood and self-enrichment.
Khenana lives.

The truth will rise. The struggle continue✊

The Struggle Over the Soul of Khenana Continues.

Siyi Khenana Commune, we note the claims by Abahlali baseMjondolo regarding a supposed branch relaunch at Khenana on 19 July 2025. We want to make it clear that this is not a relaunch of the Khenana. It is an attempt to create a parallel structure led by a rival group run by people involved in the deceit and the tragic deaths of our dear comrades Lindokuhle Mnguni, Ayanda Ngila, and Nokuthula Mabaso

Akukusha ke lokhu okwenzekayo. the movement expelled Khenana, labeling us and our late comrades as criminals, this is a matter of public record, sine video ka Mongameli esho lokhu. If, as they claim, Khenana is a place of criminals, siyazibuza ke, why return? why fight so desperately to reclaim a space you’ve disowned and condemned? Lomzamo to hijack the heritage of Khenana is not about genuine struggle, it is a desperate act of survival. The very people now claiming to relaunch are the same who destroyed our community hall and cut down our fences.

Siyazibuza ke, why is Abahlali so determined to reclaim a space they publicly abandoned and vilified? Is it the legacy of resistance that they now seek to appropriate for political survival? Or are there deeper, or kukhulu kunalokhu?

We again want to make it clear that those involved in this so-called relaunch are not part of Khenana Commune Projects. They are part of a coordinated effort to discredit, divide, and ultimately take control of our struggle for survival. But we will not be silenced.

In time, we will fully expose the harassment and political violence that the leadership of Abahlali has inflicted upon us. For now, we are saying, leave us alone. Let Khenana be.

We have suffered enough.

Khenana Commune Statement in Commemoration of Nokuthula Mabaso (5 May 2022)
“She lived the struggle, and died for it. But she remains with us.”

Yesterday, the anniversary of her brutal assassination, the Khenana Commune stands in collective remembrance and deep mourning for our beloved comrade, Nokuthula Mabaso. On 5 May 2022, we lost not only a tireless organizer, mother, and community leader, but a fearless defender of the working class and the oppressed — especially women who continue to bear the heaviest burdens of poverty and violence in our society.

Nokuthula was not just a leader in title; she was the backbone of our struggle. As a key guiding force within Khenana Commune, she led from the front — organizing food sovereignty programs, coordinating communal kitchens, defending land occupations, and holding corrupt officials accountable. She took on this revolutionary work in the full knowledge that it placed her life at risk. Yet she never backed down. Her courage lives in us.

She carried within her the uncompromising conviction that freedom for the poor is inseparable from the liberation of women — a feminist grounded not in academic theory, but in lived resistance. Nokuthula demanded a politics where women are not relegated to support roles or silenced in meetings, but are recognized as builders, leaders, and theorists of our struggle. Her feminism was forged in the fire of daily survival — and her dream was one where all women could live with dignity, safety, and sovereignty over their bodies and lives.

As a socialist, she envisioned a society free from exploitation, where land and wealth would be held collectively by the people who produce it. She believed that the commune must be both the site of resistance and the seed of a new world — a world where no one goes hungry, where no one is homeless, and where no mother has to bury her child because of poverty or state neglect.

The bullets that killed Nokuthula were meant to silence our movement. Instead,
