After an extensive search, the body of SAPS K9 Floppy was located today by W/O Ge**er and K9 Fina. 💔

Floppy gave his life in the line of duty - a sacrifice few of us can truly comprehend. While many will see a police dog, those who know these incredible K9s understand they are so much more. They are partners, protectors, family, and loyal servants who run towards danger when others are running away.

Our thoughts are with Floppy’s handler, his SAPS family, and everyone who loved and worked alongside him. We can only imagine the heartbreak they are experiencing today.

Thank you, Floppy, for your service, your courage, and your unwavering loyalty. Your watch may be over, but your legacy will live on in the lives you protected and the people who will never forget you.

Run free, brave boy. 🌈🐾

CAMPAIGN RECAP

Today marks the end of our 50 for 50 Campaign, coinciding with Tami's 50th birthday, and what we have achieved together over the last 50 days has been nothing short of extraordinary.

When we launched this campaign, our goals were simple: to raise much-needed funds, build awareness, and educate our community about the incredible work our K9 Search and Rescue teams do every day. Thanks to each and every one of you, we exceeded every expectation.

In just 50 days, together we:

🐾 Raised R25,450 in donations to support our teams and their lifesaving work.

🐾 Reached an incredible 746 070 people – a staggering growth of 11,945%.

🐾 Saw 58,659 engagements through likes, comments, shares, and conversations an increase of 13,967%.

🐾 Received 1,549 shares, showing us that these stories, these teams, and this mission resonated with so many of you.

🐾 Welcomed 384 new followers into our community.

While these numbers are remarkable, they only tell part of the story.

Behind every view, like, comment, share, and donation is a person who now knows a little more about the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment of our volunteer K9 Search and Rescue teams. Every interaction helped us shine a light on the work these incredible handlers and dogs do to bring loved ones home.

The awareness we've created, the community we've grown, and the funds we've raised over the last 50 days will help us continue championing these remarkable teams and the lifesaving work they do. Together, we are building a stronger, more informed community that understands the vital role these handlers and dogs play when families need them most.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in our mission, supporting our teams, sharing our stories, and helping us make an impact.

🐾 2 Days Left. 2 Days to Make a Difference. 🐾

In just two days, our 50 for 50 campaign comes to an end!

What began as a simple idea has become something so much bigger than we ever imagined.

Over the past 48 days, we have shared stories of courage, dedication, hope, heartbreak, resilience, and love.

We have introduced you to incredible K9 Search & Rescue dogs who tirelessly search through floodwaters, rubble, dense bush, and impossible terrain.

We have shared the stories of handlers who devote countless hours to training, who place complete trust in their canine partners, and who answer the call when families need them most.

We've celebrated heroes, honoured those we've lost, highlighted remarkable rescues, and shone a light on the extraordinary bond between dog and handler.

But perhaps most importantly, we have helped raise awareness.

Because before this campaign, many people may never have realised just how vital K9 Search & Rescue teams are. The amount of training goes into every search. How much sacrifice is made behind the scenes. How much these teams mean to families waiting for answers. And how often these heroes work quietly, without recognition, simply because someone needs help.

If there is one thing we hope this campaign leaves behind, it is a greater appreciation for these incredible teams and the work they do every single day.

And while we've spent the past 48 days telling their stories, this campaign has also reminded us of something powerful: people care.

People care about community.
People care about helping when they can. People care about the dogs and handlers who dedicate their lives to serving others.

We've seen it in every donation, every share, every comment, every message of encouragement, and every new follower who joined us on this journey.

In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, you've reminded us that kindness, compassion, and generosity are still very much alive. For that, we are deeply grateful.

The funds raised will help us continue supporting these remarkable dogs and handlers with equipment, operational support, wellbeing initiatives, retirement care, treats, safety gear, and so much more.
Brenda's Canine Fund is a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC), and we are incredibly grateful for every person who chooses to stand alongside us in this mission. For those wishing to make a larger contribution, we are able to issue Section 18A tax certificates for qualifying donations, ensuring that your generosity not only supports these incredible teams but may also provide tax benefits to you as a donor.
Today, with only two days remaining, we're inviting you to help us finish this journey as strongly as we started it.

If you've followed our journey...If you've shared a post...If you've learned something new...
If you've been inspired by the stories we've told...If you've ever been moved by the dedication of these incredible teams... Please consider making a donation.

No amount is too small.

The campaign may be ending.

But the searches don't stop. The training doesn't stop. The call-outs don't stop. And neither does the need.

Let's make these final two days count.

Together, we've raised awareness.
Together, we've built a community.
Together, we've made a difference.
Now let's finish strong.
Brenda's Canine Fund is a registered NPC. Section 18A tax certificates are available for qualifying donations.

If K9 Dante hadn't been airlifted to a veterinarian that day, he may not have survived.

It's a frightening thought.

When most people think about Search & Rescue dogs, they picture incredible success stories. They picture dogs finding missing children, locating vulnerable adults and helping bring loved ones home.

What many people don't realise is that every time these dogs deploy, they face real dangers of their own.
One of those heroes was K9 Dante from Umhlali K9 Search & Rescue.

In 2022, Dante was assisting in a search operation in Nongoma when disaster struck. While searching alongside his handler, Sergeant Clinton Odayar, and fellow rescuers, the team was suddenly attacked by a swarm of bees.

Dante was stung multiple times and his condition rapidly deteriorated. What had begun as a mission to help someone else quickly became a desperate race to save one of their own.

A South African Air Force helicopter was called in and Dante was airlifted to an emergency veterinarian. Thanks to the quick actions of everyone involved, his life was saved.

Stories like Dante's remind us that Search & Rescue work is not without risk. These dogs work in dense bush, remote mountains, flood zones and unstable terrain. They face extreme weather, snakes, wildlife, exhaustion and hazards that nobody could have predicted when the search began.

In Dante's case, that danger came from a swarm of bees.

Every search carries risks - not only for the rescuers, but also for the dogs who work tirelessly beside them. While the public often sees the successful outcome of a search, they rarely see the sacrifices made along the way.

The reality is that these remarkable dogs willingly go wherever they are needed. They push through thick vegetation, difficult terrain and dangerous conditions in the hope of finding someone else's loved one.

Thankfully, Dante survived that day and went on to enjoy his retirement after a distinguished career of service.

Although Dante has since crossed the rainbow bridge, his story continues to remind us of the courage, dedication and sacrifice of every Search & Rescue K9 that answers the call to help.

His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the families he helped and the awareness he brings to the hidden dangers these incredible dogs face in the line of duty.

At Brenda's Canine Fund, we support these extraordinary K9 Search & Rescue teams and help provide the equipment, care and resources they need to continue serving communities across South Africa.

As part of our 50 for 50 campaign, we invite you to stand behind these heroes.

There was a time when the sound of a helicopter overhead would make our hearts race.

When every phone call felt like it might be the call.

When every message brought a flicker of hope.

In July 2016, during the devastating Durban floods, our mom, Brenda, disappeared.

One moment she was driving home.
The next, our world stopped.

What followed were days that blurred into weeks.

Days spent searching. Waiting. Praying. Hoping.

Hundreds of people joined the search. People we knew. People we didn't. Search & Rescue volunteers. Police officers. K9 teams. Complete strangers who gave up their time to help us look for someone they had never met.

At a time when we felt utterly broken, they carried us. When we couldn't find the strength ourselves, they gave us theirs.

And although we never got the ending we longed for, we witnessed something we will never forget - the extraordinary kindness of ordinary people.

That experience changed us forever.
It is the reason Brenda’s Canine Fund was born.

It is the reason we are so passionate about supporting Search & Rescue K9 teams.

And it is the reason we wrote The Rainbow After the Storm.

For years, this story lived only in our hearts. Now, for the first time, we have shared it with the world.

Not because it is easy. But because we know there are others carrying grief, loss, heartbreak and unanswered questions of their own.
Others who need to know they are not alone. Others who need to know that even when life doesn't give you the ending you hoped for, it is still possible to find purpose, hope and light again.

Today's 50 for 50 ask is a little different……Instead of asking for a donation, we're asking you to support our cause by purchasing a copy of The Rainbow After the Storm.

Every book sold helps us continue supporting the incredible Search & Rescue K9 teams who stand beside families during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

If you've followed our journey...
If you've ever supported Brenda's Angels... If you've ever wondered what happened during those days, weeks and years that followed...
We would be honoured if you read our story.

Because this book is so much more than a book. It is our mom's legacy. It is proof that love lives on. And it is our way of turning one family's pain into purpose. 🌈🐾

Even after the storm, there is still a rainbow.

05/06/2026

For three days, Constable Songezile Katikati barely slept.

Not because he was searching for a missing person. But because he was searching for one of his best friends. His K9 partner, Olive.

For six years, Songezile and Olive worked side by side as a Search & Rescue team. Together they searched for missing people. Together they brought answers to families. Together they helped save lives.

Then one day in 2018, during a search for a missing man in the Eastern Cape, everything changed. Olive successfully located the missing man alive. But on the journey back, local dogs began chasing her.

Frightened and disorientated, Olive ran. 😢

And suddenly, the dog who spent her life helping to find missing people had become the one who was missing. For the next three days, Songezile searched relentlessly.

He later described them as the longest three days of his life. He couldn't sleep. He couldn't stop thinking about her. He said losing Olive felt like losing a child.

Why?

Because for six years, Olive wasn't just part of Constable Katikati’s job. She was part of his life. Day after day they trained together. Travelled together. Faced difficult searches together. Celebrated successes together. And carried the weight of heartbreaking searches together.

Search & Rescue handlers spend more time with their K9 partners than many people realise. They learn to trust them completely. In difficult and dangerous situations, handlers often place their faith in their dog's abilities when there is little else to guide them.

Over time, that trust becomes something much deeper. A handler knows every quirk, every habit and every signal their dog gives. They know when they're excited. When they're tired. When they're focused.
When they're telling them, "I've found something."

The bond becomes so strong that the dog stops feeling like a partner and starts feeling like family.

So when Olive disappeared, Songezile wasn't worried about losing a valuable Search & Rescue dog. He was terrified of losing someone he loved. Someone who had stood beside him through years of service. Someone who had helped him bring hope to countless families.
Someone who never once questioned where they were going or why. She simply trusted him enough to follow.

Thankfully, after three agonising days, Olive was found. Dehydrated.
Exhausted. But alive.

And when Songezile finally saw her again, he couldn't stop crying. His partner was coming home.

Stories like this remind us that behind every successful Search & Rescue dog is a handler who loves, trusts and depends on them every single day.

They search together. They train together. They face danger together.
And sometimes, they need rescuing too.

At Brenda's Canine Fund, we support these incredible K9 Search & Rescue teams and help provide the equipment, care and resources they may need to continue their life-saving work.

When a child goes missing, every minute matters.

In Search & Rescue, there is something known as the "Golden Hours" - the critical period immediately after a person disappears.

This is often when search teams have the greatest chance of finding someone quickly and safely. That is why K9 Search & Rescue teams mobilise so rapidly.

Few stories demonstrate this better than the rescue of a two-year-old little girl in the Bergville mountains in 2018.

The toddler had disappeared into rugged terrain and spent two freezing nights alone in the wilderness. As the hours turned into days, hope began to fade.

But Warrant Officer Jacques Meyer and the Ladysmith K9 Search & Rescue team refused to give up! They worked tirelessly, navigating difficult terrain, battling freezing temperatures and covering vast areas in their determination to bring her home.

Then came the breakthrough.
After almost 48 hours alone on the mountain, the little girl was found alive.

Imagine that moment. A tiny two-year-old, cold, exhausted and frightened, having spent two nights alone in unfamiliar surroundings.

W/O Jacques Meyer gently picked her up and wrapped her safely in his arms. No longer alone. No longer lost.

Carrying her down the mountain, he made the journey back to where her desperate family waited. Then came the moment every parent hopes for but fears they may never experience.
A mother seeing her little girl again.
Holding her. Hearing her voice.
Feeling her heartbeat against her chest.

After days of fear, uncertainty and unimaginable anguish, her child was finally back where she belonged. Safe in her mother's arms.

There are few moments in Search & Rescue more powerful than that.

What many people don't realise is that every hour a person remains missing presents new challenges. Weather changes. Terrain becomes harder to navigate. Scent trails become weaker. Time becomes the enemy.

That is why trained K9 Search & Rescue teams are so invaluable. Their speed, skill, determination and ability to cover large areas can make all the difference between tragedy and reunion.

Stories like this remind us why these teams do what they do. Because somewhere, a family is waiting. Hoping. Praying. And sometimes, thanks to extraordinary people and extraordinary dogs, they get their miracle.

At Brenda's Canine Fund, we support these incredible K9 Search & Rescue teams and help provide the equipment, care and resources they need to continue their life-saving work.

With just 10 days to go until 10 June, we thought it was the perfect time to remind everyone what 50 for 50 campaign is all about.

At its heart, 50 for 50 is about supporting the incredible K9 Search & Rescue teams who step in when families need them most.

The dogs who search through flood zones, rubble, dense bush, and challenging terrain.
The handlers who train tirelessly, build unbreakable bonds with their K9 partners, and answer the call when others can't.

The teams who bring hope, answers, and sometimes the closure that families desperately need.

But this campaign is about more than fundraising. It's also about education and awareness.

Many people don't realise just how invaluable these teams are until disaster strikes or a loved one goes missing. Through this campaign, we've tried to shine a light on the extraordinary work these dogs and handlers do, the countless hours of training behind every search, and the critical role they play in bringing hope, answers, and sometimes miracles when families need them most.

These teams are often the unsung heroes behind the scenes. By sharing their stories, celebrating their successes, and highlighting their challenges, we hope more people will understand just how important their work truly is.

Over the past 40 days, we've shared stories of heroism, dedication, partnerships, training, retired K9s, community support, and the many ways these teams make a difference. We've also shown how your donations help provide equipment, safety gear, operational support, treats, retirement gifts, and so much more.

But most importantly, we've seen something truly special: People showing up, through donations, sharing our posts, messages of supports and new followers who have chosen to be part of this journey.

Thank you.

As we head into the final 10 days, we're asking for one last push.

Whether it's 50c, R5, R50, R500, R5000, or any amount divisible by 50, every contribution helps us continue supporting the heroes who show up when it matters most.

We don't always showcase everything we do, but when we receive messages as heartwarming as this one, we have to share.

W/O Ge**er and K9 Fina are proudly showing off their new boots, with W/O Ge**er sporting a brand new pair of Merrell, generously donated through our partnership with Merrell

For most of us, a pair of boots is just another piece of gear. But for a Search & Rescue K9 team, the right equipment can mean greater safety, improved comfort during searches, and protection across challenging terrain.

This is exactly why the 50 for 50 campaign matters.

When you choose to donate, whether it's 50c, R5, R50, R500, or any amount divisible by 50, you're helping make moments like this possible. You're helping provide the practical items that keep our handlers and K9s safe, comfortable, and ready to answer the call when they're needed most.

A huge thank you to Merrell for supporting W/O Ge**er and K9 Fina. Partnerships like these, combined with the generosity of our community, allow us to continue supporting the incredible teams who dedicate their lives to helping others.

Together, we can help keep these heroes on their feet — and paws.
