For this selection, we’re travelling through three cities that have been part of Alternativa’s journey – Almaty, Yogyakarta, Medellín – and looking at them through the films shot there.

From the city where Alternativa began in 2023, to Yogyakarta in 2024 and Medellín in 2026, these places have brought together filmmakers, audiences, and stories from across the Global South.

One of the modules in Cinema for Change: Impact Distribution, an online course by Alternativa, explores impact work from exactly this perspective.

Margje de Koning (Movies that Matter Festival) walks you through the process of planning for social change – from crafting a compelling story and finding the right target audiences to connecting with existing movements. And, ultimately, helping viewers not only think differently, but act differently.

The course is free and available online – learn at your own pace and find inspiration and ideas for your own work.
